  1. Fascinating video thanks Phoebe and Matt. Africa is the only continent we haven't been to yet so it is on our list. How did you get on for phone data when you were away from wifi?

  2. Great video, thanks v much! I highly recommend seeing the Drakensberg Mountains, the Mpumalanga escarpment, and driving along the Garden Route, with stops along the way. However, the main reason I am writing is that I lived in, or near Cape Town for > 8 years, and became familiar with people being injured and even killed on the mountain chain that stretches northwards from Cape Point to Table Mountain, Lion's Head, and Signal Hill. I rarely climbed Table Mountain, but on two occasions I did so, I saw tourists in trouble. You must wear proper shoes, preferably hiking boots but failing this, good trainers (sneakers) with grippy soles. Do NOT wear slip-slops (flip-flops) or sandals! Be prepared for the weather to change dramatically from the bottom to the top. The mountain often shields the paths on its inland (eastern) side from ferocious wind blowing in from the open Atlantic. It is often hot and sunny at the bottom, but cold at the top with an icy wind. Cloud and rain can envelop the "table top" in minutes. Take a backpack with water, chocolate (candy) bars, a really good jersey, and a raincoat. A wide-brimmed hat and good sunglasses ("sunnies") complete your kit. An American family who were skimpily dressed and had hopeless footwear got into trouble during one of my climbs. The weather at the top was really cold and by the time they got down they were shivering and a ghastly colour. What is more, about halfway down the father tripped and bent a finger completely backwards, breaking it. He had to walk down in agony. What should have been a great day for them had become misery! On another occasion I was there, a woman who was clearly unfit suffered a heatstroke about one third of the way up. Someone managed to get her to lie down under a shrub next to a tiny stream, and bathe her with water, but she was clearly in bad trouble. People have also died climbing Lion's Head when their hands slipped on the chains. The last death just before I left Cape Town occurred when a teenager fell from a contour path on the mountain above the famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. You may also encounter berg adders on the paths, as I have. Do NOT harm or attack them – just give them a chance to escape into the undergrowth. Having said all this, if you take the basic precautions and also leave plenty of time to climb up, enjoy the stunning views from the different viewing sites at the top, and climb down long before the sun does: no problem!

  3. If you dont have your own driver then get uber everwhere at and ladies DO NOT WEAR JEWELRY at night. My wife was mugged jan 22nd 2004 at night just for a cheap silver necklace . Leave jewels at home

  4. Thank you for making this video <3 I am about to go on a roadtrip, starting from cape town, to Johannesburg. Litterly with no clue what kind of clothes I should wear. But Layers it is!!
