Kenya: The Tribal Traditions Live On | African Renaissance | TRACKS

In Kenya, a state created barely a century ago, Afua Hirsch explores how the British spun an idealised stereotype while carving out a brutal empire. Afua reveals the extremes of life today, the urban sprawl and untouched outback, and a young population still pushing away the lingering darkness of the British imperial past.

  1. I'm an Indian and I've had the good fortune to live in and explore Kenya. I really, really love the people and the food and culture. Everyone is so polite and soft spoken. The food is simply delicious. I was sad to have to leave for personal reasons. But I'll always cherish the time I spent in Kenya. If I'm blessed with good fortune, I'll be really keen to visit some other countries in Africa and really explore the places. Thankfully I was presented with opportunities to visit deep and remote parts of Kenya so I had the privilege of really talking to and befriending some Kenyans, not just falling into the tourist circles

  2. As a Kenyan am still amazed by Mekatilili Wa Menza, Luanda Magere, Fumo Liyongo, Koitalel Arap Samoei and Wangu Wa Makeri. Education is everything.
Are those like totem poles, I thought all along it was a native American thing only. 😳

  3. Very much informative 👍 I love 💘 African people because they are Sweet Cute and very much Sincere friends and wish to have a Nice friend there .I would like to Marry a beautiful girl 👧.

  4. I recall sitting in a cinema years ago (with an ever-tightening chest) in the former island colony of Trinidad, watching the movie "Out of Africa", as it showcased some of the indignities and atrocities of British colonialism. But hearing Meryl Streep (as Karen Blixen) refer to the indigenous people as "My Kikuyu"… now THAT almost turned my tension-headache into a stroke! 🤔

  5. Very nice documentary.💫 Thank you, Dear Afua.
I would like to highlighten the passage about active remembering (26:37 ff.) the resistance of Mau Mau against the colonialists.
    🤏🏻🧠👂🏿

  6. 100% you are allowing yourself to be owned, oppressed, and destabilized when you allow people to come into your country with the sweet words of ‘helping’ … But what people don’t understand is they’re helping themselves to the natural resources to the land ,to the people.
