Jessica Berlin – Policy of Escalation Management has Hurt Ukraine and is Not a Strategy for Victory.

Fears of Russia’s collapse in Biden’s and Scholz’s administrations run deep and can’t be changed by telling stories of Russian war crimes alone. Advisers and analysts have been conditioned by decades of Soviet nuclear threat and memory of the chaotic and rapid collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s. But what can turn politicians that…

  1. I liked this interview because Jessica was honest about how nations in Africa have been treated. If we are serious about democracy, we need to support governments towards that end.

  2. TRUMP IS THAT UN MENTIONED ENTITY THAT AIDED & ABETTED OUR ENEMIES IN THE AUTOCRACY AXIS POWERS, BY LETTING PUTIN GET SYRIA, VENEZUELA NOW TURNED TO PUPPET REGIMES HARBORING TERRORISTS & ALL AGAINST DEMOCRACIES, & TRUMP ENABLING PUTIN TO TAKE CRIMEA AS TRUMP WAS DISCOVERED BY THE PRESS DRAGGING HIS FEET ON SENDING CRUCIAL VITAL AID WHEN PUTIN WAS INVADING CRIMEA 2014, & NOW STOPPING AID TO UKRAINE AGAIN FAVORING OUR ENEMIES AGAINST US, THE SAME ENEMIES WHO HAVE BEEN ATTACKING US COVERTLY, & IN PROXY WARS ARMING & DIRECTING ATTACKS THAT KILLED MANY U. S. SOLDIERS, & EVEN NOT THAT LONG AGO TRUMP CAUGHT YET AGAIN BY THE U.S. PRESS, FOR NOW OUR FREE PRESS, FINDING OUT CIA HAD INFORMED TRUMP, THAT PUTIN HAD BOUNTIES FOR ASSASSINATIONS OF U. S. SOLDIERS PAYABLE TO ANYONE, INCLUDING INTERNATIONAL TERRORISTS, & PRESS ALSO FINDING THAT TRUMP HAD NOT EVEN SAID ANYTHING NOR DOING ANYTHING TO SAVE OUR SOLDIERS, AS TO NOT ANGER PUTIN, WHO I TRULY BELIEVE HAS TRUMP COMPROMISED, & ALL TRUMP COULD SAY ABOUT ASSASSINATED SOLDIERS, IS IF TOLD BY CIA IT MUST HAVE SLIPPED HIS MIND. & TRUMP EANTS TO TURN USA INTO A RUSSIAN TYPE AUTOCRACY WITH HIS MOVES, HIS PLACING YES MEN THAT WILL ACT AGAINST AMERICANS, FAVORING TRUMP & HIS WISHES OVER COUNTRY. & PUTIN IS REAPING THE WINS YET AGAIN, THUS IRONICALLY TRUMP MAKING OUR ENEMIES GREAT AGAIN.

  3. It was a good conversation but the guest seems a bit naive or simplistic in her analysis of European Imperialism and civilisation.

It wasn't all one thing and even within Empires like the British that I'm most familiar with there was a lot of variation between colonies/dominions/protectorates etc.

  4. The thing Jessica mentions and I dont think Ive heard anyone elae confirm it. Russia has already played their big hand. We either defend Ukraine and Risk nuclear war or we just surrender everything now anyway. Because if we wont stop Russia in Ukraine because they will nuke us, we wont stop them when they are in Latvia, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Greece, France. NATO means nothing against the threat of nuclear weapons if we are not prepared to possibly take on that threat.

Let me be clear, I do not want nuclear war, but if we are not PREPARED for that risk then we need to make peace deals with the dictators now.

  5. What a nut job! If the Western powers were so wrong about Russia and that explains their defeat, could it also be they weee wrong about launching this proxy war against Russia? At the very least they clearly miscalculated I their own capabilities and underestimated Russia’s. Incompetence and corruption that cost hundreds of thousands of lives, but not their children’s. “Escalation management” she says is to blame because “they él believed Russia’s threats. Hmm… They had no choice without ignoring military technical facts, like demonstrated nuclear power. If we get nuked it will be because of warmongers like this young woman who only parrots the worst of Neocon Russophobia. They already destroyed useful idiots in Ukraine.

  6. It’s hard to make a point short – inclusion of Africa, sure, really depend upon them, no. Don’t ‘make’ real partners out of mist.

  7. Jessica Berlin highlights our need for getting the money out of politics, because it's gumming up our ability to isolate Russia economically, to declare Russia a terrorist state, to deny Russians tourist visas. US policy should follow an ethical path, and not be hindered by big money donors, dark money, quid pro quos, and the like. 🗽

  8. This won't be the last aid package coming from the US, I believe that when Biden wins his second term, and Trump is off to court and prison, the ability to pass aid will improve. That means another slow time between packages however, and given our track record, having Europe step up to the plate will be a godsend during that dry spell. Although, seeing the popularity of aiding Ukraine at 73%, and even the mobster Trump now in support, the aid may come more often. It's simply a popular position despite all the rhetoric about donor fatigue, and savvy politicians are waking up to this

  9. It all looks similar to the naivety we had prior to WW2. Putin is a trickster, a cunning fox who has usurped power and has visions of crowning himself emperor, much like Hitler or Napoleon. But nice clubby political leaders thought, again, incorrectly that this man was going to be consistent and embrace democracy, which as he slid slowly into dictator mode and plunged Russia slowly along with him nobody in the West caught on. Francis Fukuyama might be right in the long run, take the 100 year view, because no rogue state stands the test of time, but first we must confront the backsliding of Russia into an old imperial mode, which in the end will fail as we support the free and democratic countries surrounding this dying empire. A more careful set of reality checks and self assessment needs to be put in place, I agree, for our leaders deluded themselves into thinking that Putin and Russia were all better after the fall of the Soviet Union, ignoring the warning signs all along the path leading up to today. I hope Biden gets better national security advisors in the next term, having no deep policy goals and insufficient assessment seems to be hampering aid to Ukraine, for when Biden could have used the lend lease act, he chose not to. Slow walking aid has been letting the Russian forces regain strength, and I wrote Biden, Sullivan, Harris, Kirby urging them to send more aid, but they just didn't do so. That's got to change. 🇺🇦🇪🇺🇺🇸🇨🇦🇬🇧🗽

  10. What a guest! She knows her stuff cold and presents the information so well! But doesn't dress up her expertise in jargon, as can easily happen with over-intellectualized analysts.

  11. I feel so old and tired, listening to young people forgetting the recent past. How are African nations treating Israel , right now? Talk about evocative cynicism.

  12. We seem to have just abandoned Africa to China and Russia. Are we just so myopic as to think the short run is the best gamble? Are we so steeped in oil that we do not understand the value of people? I've been thinking about designating Russia as a terrorist state; lots of pros and cons. Nice discussion (per always).

  13. sure, hindsight is 20/20. but if we weren't coming out of covid in 2022, the west wouldn't have been soo sheepish. covid and fears of global recession put the threat of putin on low priority, which is probably one main reason putin thought he could win that risky gamble. how quickly everyone forgot the last few years.

  15. Thank you Jessica, for an honest and clear logic. Yes, this is a crisis of leadership in the West, and Ukraine is paying with lives for this ridiculous and cowardly policy of “not provoking Russia”.

  16. Were these innocent African "vctims" really better than the "bad"Europeans. Defenitly not. They enslaved themselves, they conquered and massacred others as any other people in history of mankind. Obviosly tehe lacked some technology or oranisational means to colonize the world. And there is no reason to think they would not have done it if there were able to.

  17. No idea why my original comment was removed, so I'll try again: Thank you. This was a fantastically insightful discussion that needs a much wider audience. Will also add, it's enormously frustrating how the vast majority of our democracies' voters can't distinguish between a politician and an actual leader.

  18. Jessica Berlin is such a joy to listen to, I have been following her works for many years, truly an inspiring and intrepid woman, especially with her having (to some extend I believe) German roots, germany certainly could use and would urgently need more people of her quality and stature!

  19. “They’ve believed Russian threats” 18:29. You are the cool guys who don’t believe the threats. You should lead the US then 😉

“An aggressor, when they smell fear, they will advance further.” 19:06 Look at NATO and the USA advancing towards Russian borders. Who do you think they perceive as the aggressor?

    So detached from reality!
