  1. The push should be for therapy to help you work through how you're feeling not to swallow a pill and make it all better. I was told for so long i needed meds by family and doctors. I never felt quit right or fully myself till therapy and realized I (most people) don't need meds I needed a therapist to help me learn correct coping skills face life and deal with how i feel and why i feel that way. Coming off meds was a struggle that put me at my lowest and almost made me lose at life but each day gets better and i feel more myself again with the help of therapy. Don't ever stop fighting for your best self numb is not the answer!

  2. i'm lucky i found meds that work for me honestly.

I know a lot of peoples depression isn't as easily diagnosed or fixed, mine isn't gone but jesus h satan christ they help.

  3. Jesus christ the misinformation, is it cool to be depressed or something?

The improper treatment will not help you though. Coming from someone who has seen antidepressants work for extremely suicidal people (yes you are more at risk in the beginning, your brain chemistry is changing) to having taken them myself for a stint since the whole fucking world crashed around me… They are extremely useful. You don't go fuckint numb. The highs get a bit less and the lows becile alot more manageable.

    Fucking hell.

  4. I am just now realizing the long-term effects of being on SSRIs for 15 years. While I was on them, I was numb and emotionless, but didn't have to deal with the mood swings and anxiety I had before. I got off them in 2020 and am still experiencing fatigue, brain fog, sexual side effects, etc. If I had known about these risks, I would have never started them in the first place. Definitely be careful what you wish for…😢

  5. 😭🙏This is why I don’t take meds to mask anything even physical pain (rarely). I prefer to do the work and figure out what’s going on with me. To each their own. I hope people feel better. 🙏😭💝

  6. this is like my experience with Seroquel as a child I warn everyone not to take it now and to find other doctors if theirs's prescribes it. I have severe memory loss of the time I was on it as a child into teenage from age 9-12 I barely remember my time in the 3 phyc-wards or the years following till my dad threw them all away and told everyone I wasn't a child any more. now I'm 32 and wont take any medication that is not limited time like anti-biotics or steroids. If I ever get put on anything daily i just discard them and stop going to those doctors.

  7. As a psych nurse with 12 years experience and someone who has battled depression and suicidal ideation for 30 years, I think its important to address a few things:

First off, it's important to understand that antidepressants and other psychotropics aren't like Tylenol or other standard medications. Everyone's brain chemistry is different and it can take a lot of trial and error to find the right med and dose that works for you. Celexa makes your friend feel like their old self but makes you feel worse? That happens. If you feel numb or empty on a medication it's up to you to work with your doctor to find something that does work, and that can take time and honesty.

Second, doctors are people too. They aren't all-knowing. I've worked with some great psychiatrists and some complete garbage psychiatrists. If you feel like your doctor isn't listening to you or respecting you views, CHANGE DOCTORS. This one is pretty big and I've seen so many people give up on treatment because the doctor is an ass. There are a lot of good practitioners out there. Just like meds, it can be a bit of trial and error to find one you work well with. I promise that they are out there.

Third, do your own research. You don't need to go down the Dr. Google rabbit hole, but I strongly recommend having a basic understanding of any med you are actively taking. Dosage range, side effects, interactions with other drugs or food. Sometimes people take all their meds at once not realizing that two basically cancel each other out when taken together and they should be taken a couple hours apart. Knowledge is power!

Fourth, antidepressants aren't meant to be a lifelong solution. They are meant to get you through a difficult period and give you enough of a breather to work on building up coping skills and getting other pieces of your life in a better place. I know taking meds has a stigma but the hope is you are able to make enough positive changes in your life that your brain chemistry balances itself out in the long run. This can take many years and largely depends on you. No one is better equipped to make positive changes in your life than you.

Lastly, please do not just stop taking your meds if you don't want them. Your brain starts changing its chemistry and by stopping suddenly it's like getting the rug pulled out from under you and you can feel much worse. If you want to try a different route work with your doctor to reduce the medication gradually.

I hope this puts things into perspective . Doctors and medication aren't the enemy and there is hope! I've been on both sides of the med window and I know life can be overwhelming. There's always support to help get you through when you need it most. Dialing 988 will connect you to the National Suiside Prevention Hotline and it's helped many people I've known.

    Keep your chin up!
