Israel Strikes Hezbollah Targets in Lebanon, Risking a 2nd All-Out War Almost a Year into Gaza War
Tommy Vietor and Ben Rhodes discuss the escalation of violence between Israel and Hezbollah into all-out war, the shuttering of Al Jazeera in the West Bank, the importance and futility of the United Nations General Assembly, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s trip to the US with a “victory plan” and a swing state ammunition…

So is this a test run of what Trump has in mind… to shut down the exposing news organizations and ban international reporting? Hope not! Seems he'd be watching Bebe. 😑
Democrats are feckless and craven. Whitmer is the governor of a state with a high Muslim & Arab population and STILL can't even bring herself to say anything explicitly supportive of them. Every word out of her mouth is some BS canned vague statement about both sides. Goddamn coward. I'll never vote for Dems ever again. It's the same BS every time; us "less desirable" minorities are expected to just validate the grievances of white women & vote based on their need for abortion, but our life and death issues are of lesser importance because we're not the "trendy" group on the Liberal pedestal.
The administration is not "passive," they are actively assisting Israel's genocide in Gaza and y'all always use soft delicate language out of some misguided loyalty to Biden and the mainstream requirement of treating our dear ally Israel with kid gloves. The IDF commits terrorism, but it's only Hamas and Hezbollah who get the official terrorist label. But all our media, Hollywood celebs, powerful CEOs, and elite educational institutions tell us Israel is benevolent so we must support them and smear every critic as being antisemitic.
Great job as always guys. But a humble plea: Can you make a bigger effort to distinguish the UNGA, the UNSC, and the UN as a whole? Thankfully, a part of the UN family 😉
17:45 Biden did not give up power voluntarily, he was ousted. And most many countries has already elected female leader where it's possible do to so, USA is the country lacking behind on such issue. People follow deeds not virtue signalling. As a host the least you can do is educate yourself about such topics.
What, you don’t get that your government might be saying one thing publicly to get through a presidential election and another thing to the Israeli government in private?
I think people are really overcomplicating Israel's strategy in this war. It's very simple, and the 'escalate to de-escalate' line really gives it away. Hamas & Hezbollah made a very strategic assessment of how they expected Israel/West to respond – in short – they expected Israel would take it on the chin, they'd drop a few bombs in a show of force, but otherwise they'd make concessions to exchange hostages. Israel doesn't have a grand plan here, they don't have an exit strategy, they don't have a win condition – they are making one thing very clear – that nobody can predict the intensity or the target of their retaliations. I hate the violence Israel is inflicting, but I understand the need to deliver that message – because their fear is that if they acted according to expectations (which Mossad may well have spied on), then Oct 8 would become a regular occurrence – anytime anyone wanted some concessions.
Zelensky is puppet. He goes where the US tells him to when the US tells him to go there and says what the US tells him to say. He looks good in a uniform though.
It's complete and utter nonsense to say that Israel is ignoring what the US says. The US is pouring weapons into Israel so presumably what the US is telling them is how to use them. What IS true is that Israel's actions are inconsistent with what the US government is saying publicly. But that's of zero interest except to someone desperate to lend credence to the American government. Even then, that would only be someone who thinks it's better to be known as stupid than as evil.
It's also utter nonsense to say that Israel disregards the damage to the civilian population. Damage to the civilian population is the short-term objective, not the accidental by-product. The longer term objective is to take the land that those civilians are living on. Duh.
Hey guys, wanna say WHY we have 40,000 troops there?
Coincidence? Good beaches?
How about a complicity with genocide? Wanna talk about that?
I would posit that American support for Ukraine is tradable under Trump, but Trump also wants something good in exchange. Trump also understands that Russia cares about Ukraine a lot, so he will feel in a very strong position. As far as aid, Trump probably wants more European spending on Ukraine and NATO.

Okay cool, confirmed there’s a moderator on this account that keeps removing pro-Palestinian comments. Cowards.
Please check out Octonauts for the kiddos
They have murdered 20000 kids you malignant zits, yet you argue about right and wrong as if there is only a political question. I have never hated liberal thinking before, but you are making it easy.
Imagine if a Hezbollah or Hamas leader somehow fought his way into a Tel Aviv apartment building and held the residents hostage. Would Israel bomb the building, knowing that they were killing Israeli citizens? It is inconceivable. The civilians in Lebanon and Gaza are hostages as surely as are the hypothetical residents in this scenario. They have not elected the terrorists to control their territory, at least not in this generation. They have no say in where the terrorists choose to hole up. But because they are not Israeli, the IDF considers their lives expendable. It is unconscionable.
Hezbollah's leadership has explicitly stated that a Gaza ceasefire would mean an end to fighting on the Northern front. Netanyahu has had the opportunity to conclude a deal and end this crisis for months but has instead chosen to sabotage negotiations at every step. The blame for the escalation lies entirely on the current Israeli government.
Can we please stop committing US troops to whatever the heck Israel wants to do?? Israel is off the chain. We should NOT be following. We are looking so weak.
You guys are really smart. Most Americans don’t really understand anything about foreign policy. What do you actually think would happen if the US stopped providing military aid to Israel? Do you think that Israel would survive? And if Israel doesn’t survive, what happens then? Does the region suddenly turn peaceful? Or does it become overrun with jihadists? And if it does become overrun with Jihad, and the terror base that is Gaza, gets to expand, what does that mean for the West?
Which war do you want to fight?
They don't speak "Sri Lankan" in Sri Lanka. They speak a number of languages including Sinhala, Tamil, and ENGLISH. That whole segment felt really disrespectful. You're clearly not an equal opportunity mispronouncer because the rest of the episode included plenty of hard to pronounce non-English names and they weren't made the butt of a joke. Come on. Do better
Those zoos in China werent "busted." They were labeled as dogs. This is sinophobic.
The irony of their statements about the UAE becoming a pariah for supporting a genocidal paramilitary regime in an episode where they don't acknowledge the US role in Israel's assaults on Gaza and Lebanon.
Palestinians in Jordan STARTING to ask why the Jordanian govt hasn't done anything? You clearly havent paid attention. JORDANIANS have been protesting their govts lack of involvement for a year! The Jordanian govt has arrested over 1000 protestors and that number is from last April!
Israel is essentially a US state.
People need to stop thinking of it as anything else.
Do people think the US would allow Mexico to fire missiles into it's territory without responding with overwhelming force?
Hezbollah are bringing death and chaos to the people of Lebanon with their futile provocation of an out of control Israel.
900???? You mean 9 thousand!!!!!
Two friends, Benjamin and Sam, are walking out of a bar. Benjamin is looking very unstable, and is attacking random bystanders. In this case, Sam should try to deescalate, pull Benjamin away, and try to keep as many bystanders out of the fight. What Sam did, was giving Benjamin a gun. That's just plain stupid.
I really respect you guys. But I don’t understand. Isabella is in Ryan proxy within the Lebanese state. They have overwhelmed the Lebanese government.
Why are you one of the impression that the US gets to Israel, sovereign nation, with enemies on all borders, what they can do to protect themselves?
So you don’t seem to have a problem with the fact that Isabella has been raining rockets down on Israel for 11 months, is that correct? And do you think Israel should just continue to take it without responding?
Did you do anything to stop this before you left office in 2016? taking cheap shots at Biden and current Dems when you guys set up all the chaos we have now. Drone Strikes in Yemen (and everywhere) for years, botched pull out of Iraq and letting ISIS happen, Red Lines in Syria, allowing Putin to take Crimea, letting Netanyahu make a fool of your administration, did nothing about settlements. You guys are criticizing the current office holders for not solving the problems you helped create. You can't erase all your eras becuase you let Trump win in 2016. Just admit you guys had a roll in messing all this up and don't drift back to appeasement. Criticizing people for standing up/for/by anything whether right or wrong is a lot more than your administration did. You don't even have the courage to say "let's abandon israel" go up to the line, but can't stand by anything
What is a no-conspiracy, factual and evidenced explanation for why US is taking such a pro stance on continuing to arm Israel? Genuinely thoughtful and evidenced analysis on current drivers and not solely historical narratives please?
Guys I'm old enough to remember a few weeks ago, Biden had to be forced out by his donors. Stop trying to rewrite history, the guy is a failure and War Criminal to boot like Bush, chainey and Blair. He belongs in an old peoples home where he can pick the color of his Jello. Not the most powerful office in the world.
I’d love a pod save deutschland because the AfD’s rise is rather similar to the Maga movement in a lot of ways, in terms of seizing on people’s grievances…some legitimate unaddressed side effects of neoliberalism & automation, some artificially inflamed paranoia…to push an anti-Other agenda.
But it’s also quite unique because of the east / west divide that is still palpable outside of Berlin, Germany’s role within Europe through the 2008 financial collapse, and our response to the refugee crises over the past decade.
Do you not think that the US should stop supplying Arms to Israel?
This pod sucks. How about standing with our ally Israel when they're attacked and not making excuse after excuse for death cult jihadis who want to murder Jews and take down America. Unsubscribed. Y'all are awful
As a former honourary Albanian, I never get tired of Edi Rama stories.
The only reason the US is advocating for UN Security Council seat for Africa is that African countries are increasingly moving towards China as the major ally against the interests of the US. Permanent seat without veto power is an insult and not some egalitarian bullshit that US is pushing. The idea that the US stands for democracy is laughable.
Great show! "Nothing but tolerance coming out of the Vatikan!", I love that. What was the name of that Newsletter that Tommy recommended? From Berlin with love
You know, Bluey isn’t just for kids (or for adults pretending it’s for the kids!). There’s actually a theory that dogs might enjoy watching it too, thanks to its color palette. So maybe the little one will be more excited to watch if the furry friend joins 😆🐶
I guess Israel seems to think that they dont have to stop until they hit the 6 million dead body mark
