I was in Sal for 3 weeks last year. I must honestly admit that it was a big disappointment. The people are very nice, but that's about it. You can't go anywhere without being bothered by pushy street vendors. Also the sea and the island itself look much more beautiful on the videos than in reality. You can forget about snorkeling, the current ensures that you cannot see anything. Except for the hotel area in Santa Maria, the island is a big ruin with great visible poverty.
Pro' s:
Shark Bay (bring your own slippers and you don't need a guide to see the sharks, don't fall for this tourist trap)
street dogs, these are really nice and sweet
Cabo Verde people are really nice
negative things:
The fish will undoubtedly taste perfect, but for non-fish eaters the food on the island is not great. We ate out twice a day for 20 days and tried many restaurants, the quality is not good.
Lots of very pushy street vendors
Apart from Shark Bay, the salt mine and the cable car, there is actually nothing to do, if you like to lie on the beach all day then this is the place for you.
I wouldn't have wanted to miss this holiday, but not a second time for us
P.s Be careful if you take a taxi to Santa Maria for the first time. You will be met by a big dark man, at first he is very friendly and acts as if he is your best friend and he takes you to the shop of his "mother". Cut this man off immediately because he only wants to sell you overpriced junk.

Fuerteventura le da mil vueltas. AquΓ hay un SenegalΓ©s en casa esquina de Santa MarΓa intentado venderte la moto o intentando estafarte.
TambiΓ©n estΓ‘ llena de prostitutas Senegalesas ofreciΓ©ndose a todas las horas del dΓa por la calle principal.
Hay mucha pobreza y da la sensaciΓ³n de mucha delincuencia.
En los supermercados es todo realmente caro, mucho mΓ‘s que en Europa y hay ausencia de carne sobre todo y de verduras y frutas frescas. Todo estΓ‘ muy pocho.
Las playas son del montΓ³n, las fotos y las vistas de dron no les hacen justicia.
Venden a la isla muy bien pero ni por asomo volverΓa.
Hay infinidad de destinos mΓ‘s baratos y mejores.

For me it was one off the ugliest island i visited. It's one big plane desert with a rock in thΓ© Middle. Try thΓ© other islands in Cap Verdie, way better. But i loved thΓ© People β€

Its a paradise lost..Now caters to mass tourism and all the worst that this brings..The most disappointing destination ive been to…Santa Maria,the main tourist town is a litter and dog overwhelmed dump

My wife and I went to Sal for the first time back in April 2023. It was amazing and won't be the last time we visit. The people are so friendly and the beaches are amazing with turquiose water. Shark Bay was one of the best experiences we've ever had. I got some amazing drone footage from the Santa Maria area. I look forward to going back there.
