Is Thailand Really a Third World Country? (Apple Controversy & More) | One Night in Bangkok Ep. 029

In this episode we are joined by Jessica, Bam, and Earn to chat about the recent (controversial) Apple video featuring Thailand, if Thailand should be considered a third-world country, and life in Thailand compared to other places in the world.

The Apple video appears to be taken down but you can see some of it on @StuartJayRaj’s channel:…

  1. I don't think what people know what the definition of a third world country is: Third World = Very little to little access to clean running water, electricity non-existent, dirt roads or just very little amount of paved roads. I've been in TH since 2010 and I've been hear this since I moved here. It wasn't third world then, and it's definitely not third world now. Of course if you go up country into the rural villages you can find this, but as whole the country is not third world.

  2. I've just come to Tokyo couple of weeks ago form Bangkok. I can easily say Bangkok is at least 10x more international than Tokyo. If Japan is 1st world country, Thailand must've be 0th world country.

  3. Yeah I dont know whats up with the sausage parties in Tokyo. In almost every bar and club you go to there are way more males. I guess thats why no one is getting married and no kids. Didnt always used to be like this.

  4. Truly when I visited Bangkok for the first time I felt lied to all my life. I was amazed at the quality of food, life, healthcare etc. in most cases surpassing any western country I’ve lived in. Thailand is amazing and America is in many parts a third world country. Go visit southern Oklahoma and drive through the ghost towns ravaged by crime and drugs affecting generations and you will take any Thai village over that any day.

  5. Thailand is not the third world country. I don’t know what standard to measure to another country to be.
But in Thailand, We are proudly to keep conservative culture and meanwhile we have constructed the land to be modern too.
So. If you come to Thailand you will see both Modern and conservative things at the same time. 😊😊

  6. Someone at Apple messed up big with that ad series.. I can still hear Trump's references to Sh*thole countries reverberating in the aftermath. But just like it's products, Apple has seen its better days and now slips often and embarrasingly,,, as is the case here. 😁🤣🙃😉

  7. When we talk about the 1st world countries that are going to shit we will be asking: "Are you doing the UK"? 😀 It's insane what's happening there, people get 2 years of jail for mean tweets while child murderers walk the streets

  8. Most people are completely programed by the western media. They literally used the word "develop" to convince people to work for them into the capitalism system. This is how the government generate revenue by collecting the income tax. When people work hard, it doesn't mean they will become rich. In contrast, they work hard for rich to get richer.

  9. Earn was very accurate on her take about the apple ad and the tiktok teachers etc.

Also to note, Apple didn't make the ad. They use an agency, the agency made the ad and apple approved it. They just didn't throw the agency under the bus. The agency is called Media Arts Lab.

    This episode was VERY good!

  10. I enjoy the conversational style you deliver in your videos and often find them entertaining and informative so thank you for posting. Perhaps one innocent faux pas was citing the historical definition to help explain what is meant by "Third World"! The general usage and abusage of this term relates to something sub standard and there lies the insult…

  11. No doubt Thailand has progress from 20 years before.
As I,ve seen from my 30 years experience of holidaying and staying there on different occasions.
The infrastructure and service of international companies has improved ten fold, my best friends there Thai people have also explained that even though the economics and financial gain of personal individuals has improved as in salaries, and Banking systems are more secure.
The Country still has many challenges ahead, only because there is so much of society relying on The tourism industry.
Just to get by, the struggle is huge because of the disparity between Rich and average and poor.
Bangkok has become increasingly popular and no doubt more expensive to stay. As most places are after Covid but much more then 10 years before.
    Anyway such is life.
It's a great country no doubt, better then most.

  12. The apple app thing. My opinion is. They might have watch a lot of Thai funny commercial ads. Someone things, to replicate the theme. If you watch a lot of Thai commercial adds. They have almost the same grain. Going to for the old theme. Apple ads are always shite. Never ever want to use apple. The phone is so annoying to use. When you sign into apple apps. You are in it for life. Buy this, buy that. Buy, buy, buy. If you want your app to work correctly buy this.

  13. In the last 20 years thailand infrastructure has improved enormously and it needed to. Its now a leading light in SEA. It just needs more manufacturing jobs and increasing exports.

  14. honestly as a European I've been to Bangkok and New York. I consider Bangkok as better developed. public transport and safety is way better. Both have bars and restaurants, more than you ever need. the homelessness in New York is insane man

  15. Yes so disgusting, dirty , place , all day sweaty not comfortable even for walk , insects everywhere , food for low level standard foreigners who probably can’t afford high standard locations lol

  16. Great video. I had no idea about the definition of third world 😂, but definitely right in saying some parts of most western countries are way more poverty stricken..
Good to see Bam from friends from thailand, i always thought she was going out with chonm? 😅

  17. I am from Hong Kong, living in Australia for decades. I love the apple ads. I growth up in city all my life, everyday looking at the high rise which make me sick, modern buildings everywhere is the same nothing special, I admire the rich culture and uniqueness of Thailand and I thought that ads brought up a lot my old memories of Thailand. The good old day. People are bit sensitive these days. vintage stuff are always more expensive

  18. Thailand indeed stands out as more than just a developing country. While it is officially classified as a middle-income nation by the World Bank, Thailand has made significant strides in infrastructure, healthcare, and education. The country is a hub for tourism and manufacturing, with a growing economy that reflects its increasing influence in the region. Moreover, Thailand's rich cultural heritage, diverse natural beauty, and strong sense of national identity add to its unique character. For an expatriate, especially one married to a Thai national, the country offers a blend of modernity and tradition, making it a dynamic and rewarding place to live. Despite challenges such as economic disparity and political instability, Thailand's potential for growth and its evolving status on the global stage should not be underestimated.

  19. On the subject of river view venues, two of my favorites are River View Residence (restaurant and bar) in Talat Noi (great sunset view)and Loy La Long hotel – maybe check if they allow non guests to visit but this little stilt house hotel is so beautiful. Plus many other nice places to eat and drink along Talat Noi river front.
Talat Noi in general is more bohemian than glamour, media and arty types.

  20. "Older guys 29-35" had me cracking. That range is considered young in here and in many Asian countries 🤣
I literally had to put my Dating apps at a higher age before or else women 25+ would not bite because they know the vast majority are immature and broke passerbys.

  21. Only ignorant people still use the term “ third world country”. Of course it was created by the U.S. to make themselves feel better about who they are, even though they are not better of than anyone. It’s only the ignorant foreigners who come to Asia and spread those negative lies so they can feel better about their terrible up bringing. right Eric?
