The exact history of North Africans is not entirely clear and even debated among the Experts. One of the oldest human archeological sites ever to be found is in Morocco. So speaking of genetics, the Imazigh people could be the true indigiounes inhabitants of Northern Africa. But apart from genetics, the entire Sahel region is definitely connected culturally. I found music and dances in Ethiopia that sound like from Morocco. In Morocco you will find all these influences in the gene pool as well. Whether people identify as Africans, Imazighen or Arab depends a lot on the state and the ruling politics. For example we Imazighen have been supressed by the culturally dominant Arab population for centuries, now that the ruling class in Morocco has recognised the Imazigh people, culture and language many people have revitalized the Imazighen identity. Same for African identity. Traditionally, Moroccan Kings have been only facing towards Europe and the Arab Gulf states (due to religion and economics) but in the past 10-15 years they turned away from Europe towards other African nations in the South, now the people are more and more realizing that they are actually also an African nation. One example of how these things play out was when some popular influencers and normal fans from Morocco joined the CAN2024 in Cote d'Ivoire (on va mourir 🙂 Apart from skin color there was not much of a difference in the culture of Ivoiriens, Senegalese and Moroccans. Unfortunately rascism still exists in some backwards minded uneducated heads in the country. But thankfuly through social media we can now see for our selves about Africa and its diverse and beautiful people, cultures and landscapes and escape the Western and Gulf Arab dominated narrative.
