I Tried a Disney Secret Project!

The Holotile infinite floor/360 treadmill could be sick for VR.

  1. I can't help but envisioning some weird dystopian/scifi/horror story where a person or group of people are purposely trapped on one of these things by the "bad guy" or whatever and no matter how hard they try to get to the edge to get off, it just keeps bringing them back to the center. Horror stories aside, overall I think this is an awesome device and for 10+ years I've been hoping someone would invent an omnidirectional treadmill. I remember seeing the first video with the designer a few months back and being blown away at how unique of a concept it was.

  2. How well did the Holotile handle sideways movement? I tried a KatWalk and found it very disappointing that it only handled forward/backward movement well. When I'd try to strafe, it felt very incorrect and very little happened.

  3. The disks look cool and all by why not just use ball bearings? Of course you don't just want them to spin freely and need motors to spin them to bring you back to center but you could walk in a straight line in any direction. Each bearing would sit on a castor wheel that has an electric motor to spin the bearing backwards but also to provide you with friction so the bearing doesn't spin freely making it impossible to walk on.

  4. All future airports would have these mats take you to your boarding gate without ever getting lost. Actually, all floors in most places could be replaced with these mats.

  5. Why isn't anyone mentioning Ready Player One movie?
Thanks for sharing Marques. The fact that this is still unreleased tells you how much better it can get. Lots of potential!

  6. With this concept of staying at the same place u will always have problems with your inner ear. They are your biological gyroscope that you cant get rid off.😊

  7. As a fat older man who loves fallout and elder scrolls type games I would love the experience of actually walking to move my avatar I could walk miles in a day and have to drink, rest and deal with pain and fatigue

  8. I am curious on the choice of using these discs that articulate vs just some spheres on a 3 axis movement? perhaps not enough torque was able to be applied or just too bulky?

  9. this is so cool. The fact that you can not only move ontop of it with your feet but use another input to control things moving on it leads to so much potential. They basically made an omnidirectional conveyer belt than can also track the movement and position of items

  10. Be easier to make it ball bearings and use magnets to increase and decrease resistance than powering a step that’s already powered, you just need a brake mechanism

  11. Literally this would revolutionise VR. Of course VR is kinda crappy, since there are not much VR games that are really immersive. At the moment, the most realistic one in my opinion is gran turismo, if you have a steering wheel. Since you have you have to be seated, it helps the immersion. But imagine how games could be with an upgraded version of a 360 treadmill. You would really feel that you are in another reality.
