Where I grew up, all the Eritreans pronounce it “eh-RIT-ree-uh” and it’s sort of considered a shibboleth. Somehow, despite the large Ethiopian and Eritrean communities in my neighborhood and a few others around town, most non-Africans still say “eh-ri-TREE-uh,” (as did I until I was corrected by an Eritrean neighbor when I was in high school). Given the widespread use of this mispronunciation, I wondered if it was a local thing, but today I met an East African woman who lives across the country from me who pronounced it the way all my Eritrean neighbors told me is correct, instead of the way this video and most others say it.

some people pronounce it like
our treea instead of a rey treea
I thought it was Uh-Rit-Tree-Uh… it just sounds better
