Renowned economist Wandile Sihlobo explores how secure land tenure, infrastructure investment, and technology have advanced South Africa’s farming sector. His talk contrasts this progress with sub-Saharan Africa’s struggles,…

who owns that land and the farms in south africa?
Thank you for that analytical speech on agriculture, spot on at macro and micro levels.. That is brilliant.
👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you Wandile
I thought it was a documentary rather than a talk 😂
In one way yes, a good presentation and good ideas about progress avenues towards food security for the African continent. Nevertheless, do others read apartheid in the presentation like I do. Initially, apartheid was instituted in SA, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique etc, in order to separate the settler community from the indigenous population, the former enjoying all the advantages. So when the former spoke of the country in which they were living, they were thinking and referring more to themselves than the indigenous population. Now, sadly, our indigenous South African brothers and sisters have adopted this same mentality in their conceptualisation of identity. They think of South Africa on the one hand, and the African Continent on the other. And for me this comes through clearly in this brother's presentation. He does not talk if South Africa as one country on the African Continent that's doing well in agriculture, but rather South Africa as a country doing well in this regard and the African Continent fating badly. In other words SA is not part of the African Continent. The other elephant in the room that this brother does not address is who is going agriculture in SA, and who owns those commercial farms with title deeds. He does not bring himself to challenge the reality of the African South African population depending on the Eurogenics segment for their food, whereas, in the other countries on the Continent, there may be poorer agricultural performance, but it is largely the locals, the indigenous people, who are producing food for their nations. Imagine if one day those imported brothers and sisters decide to poison the food. This is not far fetched. Remember what Bill Gates is doing across the Continent. So yes, let us learn from one another, but as peers of the African Continent, not as some foreign country called SA patronising the rest of the Continent, or worse still, addressing the African Continent. That idea of title deeds for land ownership and management is important, accompanied by individual investment, with farmers organising themselves as an industry. On GM crops and seeds, yes, there are merits to it, but so too are there merits to opposition to the idea. Have you heard of how they want to make it law, or it may already be, in Kenya, that whoever passes on natural seed to another will be arrested.
Good talk. You didn't mention Farmers Weekly, an amazing publication.
Nothing Good About GMO.
Farming is NOT for sissies, you have to be resilient hardworking and have great faith, they have great hardships its a sector that can have Great losses, and big gains. I have great respect for people who are prepared to work 7days a week 365 days a year to put food on our table
The drake of South African agricultural economics this one
Great presentation and talk. Looking forward into seeing more of him after this… 👌🏾
With all this being said, the natives wants their land back!!!
Wandile is a knowledgeable sincere expert but it was interesting to see how quickly he went through point 3 on genetically modificatied seed tech, his disclaimer about this point was as long as his discussion of it.
Is he part of John's team?? Because he needs to be there
Yeah! land grabbing is not the solution….. Let the farmers and experts in the food production industry do the job. Not people who want land to build SHACKS!
A lot of this stuff is good in theory, but cause of the powers that be, would never be practically implemented
So, to put it simply, South Africa's agricultural sector is thriving because it embraces capitalism, while other African countries are struggling because they do not. Hmm, who knew? 🤔 Don't let Malema see this.
Ntwana yam madoda❤ well done
Thank you Wandile. 🇿🇦
This is marketing Mzansi.
You forgot to mention the employment of foreigners to exploit the cheap labour.
Great insights!!
Very informative. There are so many lessons African countries can learn from SA's agriculture sector
This is the man that the min of agriculture should have on his team but because he's 🖐🏿 that won't happen. He'd rather have a r@cist and 🖐🏻 men with just matric.
Why is this guy not our minister of agriculture?? Less political gaming and more of this clear thinking please 🙏🏽
Brilliant talk brother!
I would agree with all your points except the GM seeds which tie us in to monsanto and agro chemicals which destroy soils and biodiversity. We need to look at regenerative options for these.
this man will run circles around the EFF's simplistic arguments about land
Wow information
This is informative and very empowering
Interesting content Mr
Powerful and concise! Thank you for delivering such an interesting and inspiring talk, Wandile.
The whole Ingonyama Trust is but one example of a backward, strongman-oriented oriented and poverty-perpetuating scam that blights the continent.
I love listening to Wandile
This should be should be our minister of Agriculture. he knows what he is talking about
Well done Wandile, very informative. I wish this could be delivered at SADC or THE AU
Im a very very proud big brother.
Great work Jola, Ngwanya, Qengeba.
Keep doing what you do, this country needs you. 💪
Take a look at Peter Byck’s documentary, “Roots So Deep…” & carbon cowboys.
Take a good look at improvements made by farmers using science AND decreasing use of agricultural chemicals.
Yes, subsidize home-owners & farmers (small-hold farmers ARE important).
Great presentation brother
