  1. Great to see information on Portugal. The situation is very similar to Ireland in many ways. Swap the digital nomands for tech corporate nomads and it's a wash. Fir an economics blog, miss the obvious issue . Supply. Prices for homes, rent for apartments etc are very high bc of weak and old infrastructure. Too few houses = high prices and higj rents. Stop harping on the digital nomads. They are just long stat tourists. That's a mainstay of the economies of many EU countries incl Portugal of course. Can't address the blocks to supply of homes in Portugal, but in IRL it seems the govt talk out of voth sides of their mouths. On the one hand they say, " we need 50K new homes p.a..fkr tbe next 20 years etc" On the other, they oversee a maze of rules, regulations and a legal system that makes it impossible for builders to build affordable houses. Combined with a NIMBY objections culture and you have a trickle of new homes , and those are only for those on higj incomes. Center right govt in Portugal and IRL seem to act to protect the values of existing homeowners, at the expense of young ppl trying to buy and rent. Apart from the increasing emigration bc of unaffordable homes, this will show up in reducing irth rates, meaning the long term viability of society is threatened. In many EU countries, the birth rate is below, some well below replacement rate ?e.g. Ita, and i suspect Portugal , IRL, Fra, Esp are heading that way too.

  2. I would argue that cost of living is due to digital nomads – i have read some articles about the cause of govern regulations on house market to increate the price – I am curious what is your take on that.

  3. Portugal is only affordable if you have a very high salary. Very high.
My husband works in IT that usually has a good salary and I was doing minimum salary. Our life style is basically stay at home and don't buy new things if the old one still works.
Even so we were going into our savings.
We moved to other country. Still do the same jobs. Have the equivalent salary for our jobs. But now we are actually saving.
Portugal is not an amazing place unless you belong to that high high salary.

  4. I'm Brazilian and lived in Porto for a while, but during the start of Ukraine and Russian war the prices of housing just went up like €300, apart from groceries and gas up to 20%. I head back to Brazil, but i plan to move again since I'm better now working remotely. You just cannot live in Porto or Lisbon with Portuguese ordinary salary, gotta live in a city nearby (40 minutes using metro) or in the center of the country in smaller cities.

  5. Portugal is a joke. Is a good country if you came from Ethiopia or you are an oligarchs. Unless you are doomed.I’m Eu citizen I was offered 1000 net pay for a call center in Porto. I risked to end up homeless or food bank unless you do not have a second and even a third income. Run 🏃‍♂️ folks

  6. My experience in Portugal has been amazing , if you work with dropshipping, digital marketing this place is awesome , I discovered I had Portuguese ancestry so I came here to wait for my citizenship , I lived in many countries but Portugal is one of the Bests , people from all the parts of the world are here the food and entertainment are cheap also

  7. Good job, American 'nomads'!
Move abroad. Overpay and force out the citizens that have built and lived in their beautiful country for thousands of years.
While you're being smug about your new affordable and cultural life, you are adding to the reasons that we are the most hated country in the world.
    🌐
    " Nomads" … yes, indeed.
    Tech strikes again. 💵👩‍💻💵🧑‍💻
