John I am thinking of getting either a Yamaha LL16 D or a Eastman AC 422 CE. But I really like the full sound you get from the Yamaha and the bottom end tone from it. Plus the eastman cost like $ 300.00 dollars more both have rose bodies with ebbany fretboard. But I fell the yamaha is the way to go. I am more of a strummer not much of a finger picker. Which would you buy. Thank you. Also I love your reviews. God Bless Canada and the USA which is where I am from.
Yeah. The black color in the paint tames any shrillness out of the highs and the chemical viscosity of the improves the harness without interfering with vibration allowing more projection. It's science… If you want a should warmer sound, with a little more shimmer in the highs you can use really dark brown instead…
Sounds like some bull poop to me. Paint would not make a guitar sound better. That’s a ridiculous concept.
Great review
Bought the LL16 w mahogany sides and back about 4 years ago as a floor model for 600 bucks. Best damn 600 bucks ive ever spent!!
Seems like they're finally getting their due as I've stumbled across many videos expounding their virtues as of late. My only fear is that Yamaha will be jacking up prices as the secret gets out. The Trans acoustic version looks reeeeeal sweet….
All of the LL16 series ship with Elixir Nanoweb 80/20s, not just cheap "Bench Strings". Unless the people you got it from are swapping 'em out 😛
Will this guitar opens up like a natural one with time??
I agree with the coloring idea. I’ve played some cheaper guitars and especially black ones sounded dead. Maybe those are just straight paint. Yours sounds amazing !
When did Eroshi, the japanese master luthier died? I just bought the Yamaha LL 16 D IN BLACK this morning( monday february 26th) and it is not signed by Eroshi like yours?
A lot of people wrote to you about this mystery about the sound of black guitar compared to a natural one, but you never come back! I have a salesman of long and mcquade in joliette quebec who wanted you to answer him about this topic! So is it that you only answer to your paying subscribers JP??
In canada, that guitar comes with elixir phosphor bronze light strings(12-53)….
When someone plays bluegrass, every damn guitar sounds the same, it's when you struck chords than you can really hear the real potential of a good sounding guitar! I just hate bluegrass! Sorry!
I've tried 2 of them, and every time actually one natural LL16 D sounded as good if better than the black one! So I guess JP that you got kind of lucky to end up with a special one every time you tried a black one! There is really no science under your affirmation!!
Don't you think JP that your mic with condenser make the sound more beautiful that it really is?
So many guitars have come and gone over 40+ years of playing and horse trading(guitars) There's a few that will stay with me untill i can no longer play them. Theyre chosen keepers because of the way they sound. Everything else is fixable.
The funny thing is 5 out of the 11 are BLACK! i think youre on to something.
BLACK MAGIC TONE!……..lol sounds silly but im a believer
thank you for the video what strings would you use?
Painting a rosewood guitar is a crime
You may have a point about the paint ! IT"S THE HARDENERS IN IT ! GREAT RESULT, by far. That is the key to violins, they have hardeners in their varnishes. What is the price range of this bad boy ?
Thank you JP, these yamaha LL16 reviews swayed my decision on buying my LL6 A.R.E, and its absolutely blown me away. I cant afford the LL16 but after playing this i can say with 100% confidence that my next guitar will be a LL16 (In black)
I have a Taylor 214cek and thats been my gigging workhorse for 2 years its doing me very well. But after buying this as a backup, im blown away. Unplugged, i prefer the Yamaha hands down, even the neck right out of the box, ive not needed my guitar guy to touch it at all! ive not gigged plugged yet (i am tonight) but if it goes well this will at least play half my gigs if not become my main. Even if not ill replace the electrics and Then itll earn me enough money to buy the upgrade!
Always come to your channel for reviews even if it's out of curiosity your my go to!
Cheers for the content
🍻 🎸
I do not want a black acoustic guitar. I have been looking at these and love the appearance of the natural version LL16R. But I’ve never heard a guitar sound so good. In fact, even just the initial strums were so visceral, powerful, and clear that I am now going to seek this out. You are a great player, but that guitar has made me believe the lore!
Woouw sound
I'm 🤔 ng it may be quick dry paint or added hardners which would affect the wood quite a bit
Because of you, I've just got an ll16d. Yeah
It’s just a clear base coat/sealer, black on top of that, then clear coat. Thats all.
Natural has a clear base/sealer with a clear top coat. Or you can directly spray the clear if it’s spruce. So black is just one/two extra base coats.
My all black guitars rip too 🙂 now sure why.
I just picked up an LL16D. Only thing I have to complain about is a mild "dead spot" 12th fret on the low e. just doesn't quite ring out like everywhere else on the guitar, but looking at getting bone or tusq nut and saddle / a high quality setup to really lock this thing in. It's incredible already i can't put it down can't wait for those little tweaks to really make it a forever piece in my collection
How much $
I wonder if the tone softens because of the paint coating. I guess the truth is…its magic.
Your passion is wonderful and inspiring. Thank you for these videos. I'll be a member soon.
HI! Thanks for your videos!! What brand of strings do you use on this Yamaha? And in general, what strings do you recommend for a big, full-bodied sound? on my black Yamaha ll16d I noticed that the sound really changes a lot by changing the strings.
Jean Larrivee also stated that they didn't want to make any more black guitars because of the amount of extra work involved in getting a perfect color/finish
Hello I commented before I have the LL16D in natural and the LL16-12 and for Christmas my wife got me a dDangelico Excel Tammany OM that has the auburn finish another nice guitar
Would you pick this over and new FG3?
YouTube bans ad-blockers and now I'm force-fed this garbage to give them money. I love it.
John, I love your videos. I actually bought an Epiphone Texan on your recommendation. Love it. Play it everyday. This might one of your best videos. It’s true, it doesn’t matter where your talent level is…..just play. Btw, I’m going to own a Yamy LL16 D one of these days!
thanks a lot can you recommend one at almost same price range for finger styling?
All of the LL 16 D's ( regardless of finish ) come with an ebony fingerboard and bridge. Oddly, none of them come with scalloped bracing, they are straight bars that are only tapered toward each end to fit under the kurfeling. ( Am I spelling "kurfeling" correctly? Probably not, lol. ) Some luthiers claim that UN-scalloped bracing on certain guitars using good, solid tone woods gives the instrument more punch in the mid's and high's. It definitely makes the instrument less prone to warping over the long haul. From what I've seen & heard from various guitarists & luthiers alike, they all give high praise to the LL 16 D in any finish. Lots of great tone, volume, even bling ( REAL abalone everywhere ) for the buck. All of this causes me to want one for myself.
He's right.painted sounds better
Got home from ordering a ll16m saw this video could totally relate as I've played a couple black acoustic guitar and had the same experience.
So rang up and changed my order to the ll16d in black 😂😅
