In his final State of the Nation Address on January 3, 2025, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo stirred public debate by firmly declaring that Ghana is not broke, countering widespread concerns about the nation’s financial state. Addressing Parliament, Akufo-Addo dismissed these claims as propaganda designed to mislead citizens.

“Mr. Speaker, the country is not as broke as some propagandists want us to believe. We are handing over a country with gross international reserves of almost $8 billion. This is more than the $6.2 billion in gross international reserves inherited in 2017,” he stated.

The President emphasized that Ghana’s reserves have grown significantly under his administration, presenting this as evidence of the country’s financial resilience. However, his remarks were met with vocal opposition from some Members of Parliament, who questioned the accuracy of his claims amid ongoing economic challenges.

Ghana is currently grappling with issues such as rising unemployment, stalled industrial growth, and environmental crises.Despite these hurdles, Akufo-Addo insisted that the economy has recovered to pre-COVID growth levels, framing it as a key achievement of his administration.

As Akufo-Addo prepares to leave office, his legacy remains a subject of intense debate. While he used his final address to highlight his administration’s accomplishments, critics argue that his tenure has left Ghana worse off than when he assumed office in 2017. His bold statement has reignited discussions about the nation’s economic future and the steps necessary to ensure sustainable growth.
