  1. I can empathise. I had ‘the cough’ and feeling increasingly tired through December. Initially diagnosed as a Gord (heartburn) cough, but the medication made no difference. Eventually referred for X-rays and ECG; very fortunately I got a cancellation. When they hooked me up for ECG, they said “you’re going nowhere, we’re admitting you!” Proved to be atrial fibrillation and a high heart rate. Six nights in hospital and a concoction of medication later, they let me out, and fingers crossed, am on the road to recovery, feeling generally better. Sounds like a similar journey to you, though no surgery for me. Keep spreading the health gospel, sounds like we were both lucky; take care!

  2. Glad it's sorted I had he same last year 1 stent fitted it is scary 😢 but it's our second chance of a few more years to enjoy life a few tears shared after the event some life style changes and yes I done the same with openly spoken to friends and family about looking after themselves 😊 so matt start those changes year on feel healthier than ever your avid listener p.s thanks for the shout out with my mate peter from cardiff at the motor show he's now on the look out for a van 😂😂

  3. We just wanted to drop you a quick note to say how relieved we are that you're still among the living! I was starting to worry when I didn't hear back from you. A heat operation is as good an excuse as any! Just kidding !!! Take care of yourself, and let's catch up soon.

  4. I had a stent fitted 26 yrs ago, so I know exactly what youve been through. Oh and that was after 3 heart attacks. I'm 71 now, and all is good, so thanks to the NHS. Stay well Matt, and life will be so much better from now on. (P.S. My name is John)

  5. Brilliant to highlight this. Both of you have
lifted the podcast to a new level. NHS NHS NHS. Election coming. Use it, we must pay the tax or lose it.

  6. When we first bumped into you at the NEC you did look a bit tired and uncomfortable when you were walking through the Halls before opening. Glad you have got it seen to and sorted. Blimey. Bit of a scare, stay well.

  7. Thanks very much for sharing your personal experience – some of the things you shared could really help save someone’s life – Really pleased you managed to get the help you needed. As always some great insight and advice – hope to say hello at Harrogate, all the very best, David & Rachel 👍❤️

  8. Glad to see you have come through this Matt. Had a heart attack myself last year, I can empathise with you, it’s the last thing you think of. So glad I listened to my Wife to talk to the Dr. The biggest hurdle for me was coming to terms with my own mortality.

  9. Glad to see you’re on the mend, just got out of hospital my self with heart issues.
Think it’s pay back for to much good living for people north of fifty (that would be me).

  10. And not a word on prevention i.e diet I'm guessing? Get yourself on the Keto life-style. We wouldn't need to rely on the NHS in the first place if we took more responsibility. Prevention is the only cure.

  11. First, if you're looking for a Motorhome Dave, I'm not that man!

More seriously, it's so good to hear that you got checked out before it was too late. Many many people walk around with problems which they underplay, thinking it's just one of those things, something minor, or a sign of age, but it might not be.

I was about your age when I went to the doctor with a few minor ailments, and if it wasn't for having several at once I wouldn't have bothered. My GP didn't think any of them were anything but minor, till he tested my blood pressure. I realised it wasn't good when he stopped talking for 15 seconds and tested it again. What triggered that test was me telling him "I can sometimes feel my heart beating when I lie down". Turned out that I had very high blood pressure, and had had it long enough to damage my kidneys and heart which, had I not seen the doc, would have eventually ruptured. That was 12 years ago and I'm here because of that GP visit for "minor" issues.

  12. The number of times a new GP to a practice is the one to pick up on this type of situation is shocking. I used to work in one. Friends since we moved have variously benefitted from a lovely new Dr we are lucky to have at our practice. I do worry about that word practice 😂. So glad you got the right treatment at the right time. A new subscriber having seen your video from the show, we went for our first time in February

  13. Not just men. Women are under diagnosed with heart disease. I too had the long cough, and a much longer story to get to a diagnosis of heart failure. Almost a year, including private medicine, to this week for diagnostic scans results. Initially I had a echocardiogram, which diagnosed the heart failure with a prognosis of less than 12 months to live, with a 12 month wait to see a cardiologist, and 8 months to get the scans needed to determine what was causing the failure. Hence going private to get this reduced to 3 months. (Sadly I no longer have a motorhome budget. )

  14. Hi Matt, I am the same age as you and relatively fit, I had a very similar experience at the end of February, last year. Scary for myself and my family. I can whole heartedly (boom boom) agree, get it checked out if you have similar symptoms.

  15. At 52 I had an eye test and the optician told me to go to my doctor,, long story short I had two stents fitted as a result of an very good optician. 10 years on I am still on 9 tablets a day.

  16. Glad you are telling people to get checked out, 2 stents 😟, Do you know The Slaws ? He is known as the stent collector 😅,great couple that I follow! , stay safe and healthy 😊

  17. Please be an advocate on Heart Health. Your public image can reach so many people who like both you and I, held off to get checked out. I at the last minute, only because a friend insisted, phoned an ambulance to take me to hospital. I felt absolutely awful and was very tired (lack of oxygen to the brain), I had no sooner hung the phone up and had my first heart attack. I was home alone. A stent and a triple bypass later I am fine again. More exercise, change of diet, and an adjustment in the work/life balance. If you think you are having issues with medications, check to see if you can have an alternative drug. A side affect of the blood pressure medication, Ramipril is an annoying cough (not good during COVID times). I had to ask the Doctor for an alternative and was then prescribed Candesarten which is working very well.

  18. I had stents 11 years ago but had another heart attack in November 23 had a quadruple bypass on 6th December ….. ready to go back to work in April 👍r NHS are amazing

  19. Very sobering episode of the podcast. Glad you managed to get an emergency procedure Matt and wish you the best for the future. The problem where I live is you're lucky if the surgery answer the phone.
