Exporters: Immature avocado harvests tainting Kenya’s image

Stakeholders in the avocado value chain are now calling for stern measures to be taken against individuals involved in harvesting of immature avocados in the country. The Avocado Exporters Association of Kenya says culprits should be charged with economic sabotage, as the practice costs the country billions of shillings in revenues.

  1. Buy the “ripe at home” avocados at your own risk. They will never get ripe.
We grow avocado in Kenya to only have a bad experience as consumers in UK. SHAME!

  2. So is it some farmers that pick them too early in Kenya? And why do they do it? Or is it to avoid them getting eaten by animals, like I worry about and therefore I pick mine earlier. My entire pear tree was emptied 1-2 weeks before the pears were entirely ripe. My mango tree bore fruit but those also disappeared.

  3. I have an avocado tree planted about 5 years ago and this year finally bore fruit. Mine are Hass and I’m picking them early as a neighbor has scared me that squirrels will eat my avocados. I find that they ripen just fine once in room temp and taste fine too. May e a different variety of avocado ripen on the trees. Mine I don’t think do.

  4. That's true not only avocado but also mango……no one can accept anything from Kenya even my friends usually laugh @ our product kindly..,..let not value quick cash but current correct flow of cash for long period # Kenya like short cuts

  6. the ovocados i eat here in US are harvested before due time and they have high water content that ruins the taske and give them short shelf life! kenyans in kenya should know better
