Ex-Black Hawk helicopter pilot believes three things went wrong in plane collision

Former Black Hawk helicopter pilot Elizabeth McCormick says she believes that three things may have led to the collision between an American Airlines flight and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River. The jet, flying from Wichita, Kansas, was carrying 64 people and three soldiers were aboard the helicopter. #CNN #News

They were also experienced in flying above restricted height, obviously. That should have been an 'F' right away.

More soldiers and civilians die in accidents caused by military infrastrucute, than die in war.

America made itself so safe with its massive military, it is now too big, and is a hazard.

Time to cut the budget, and return the money to society.

They were at the same altitude so how did they not see the plane coming. They never move their heads? They only look straight ahead at all times?

The pilot of the helicopter was above the flight ceiling of 200 feet plain & simple! With respect Elizabeth nothing you or any 1 else says will change anything, the pilot is at fault. It is utter stupidity to be carrying out military operations in or around any busy airports.
R.I.P. To those that lost their life's. My condolences to their families & true friends.

Yup, this is one of my doubts. Why did the ATC kept saying CRJ, is the AA 3130 also a CRJ? And how easy is it for pilots to tell a CRJ, Boeing Airbus in mid air at around 8:40 PM near a city?

It’s a BAD arrangement to have another aircraft nearby on path of landing. No excuse.

Military training can train their pilots away from from LANDING PATH of commercial planes.

As always all pilots know, Strong wind can drop a plane down hundreds feet all of a sudden.

Helicopters activity should separate from fix wings planes.

Any Experience pilot could make a mistake.

What I fail to understand is why doesn't a military aircraft have sensors up the wazoo? Wouldn't they have sophisticated sensors telling them where planes are around them? IN combat situations, wouldn't they have this type of technology to aid them?

    1. ATC should have kept the helo out of the final path of the active runway until the CRJ would have landed.

    2. Military pilots should not play in the vicinity of large active airports.

    3. civilian professional pilots fly at night with one or two crew. They don't need four of them. But they know what they are doing and how to do it…

Why are helicopters allowed to cross the line up to the runway period? Surely evacuation training routes in busy airspace can be planned without the need to cross an immediate runway approach. Why is that so necessary compared to avoiding the risk of a collision with a CIVILIAN commercial airliner?

What does the former pilot mean when she says the ATC should have asked the black hawk pilot can they see the plane at 5 o'clock. At what point was the plane at 5 o'clock relative the the helicopter? The clip that was shown and the flight path would suggest the plane was at their 11 or 10 O'clock and they were flying into a position perpendicular to the plane.
