This is TOTALLY true. And the only people who can help Blacks is their own community. Throwing more money and accommodations at them will not raise their standard of living. I worked at a beautiful all-black high school with a gigantic budget and the students did not appreciate it, we chronically absent and the failure rate was around 65%. They don't want to improve. And many of them are racist toward Whites.

I'm no longer progressive. I've spent 45 of my 51 years blindly identifying as a Democrat. As I've gained knowledge and wisdom, I realize how much I've been manipulated. At my core, I believe in "personal accountability." Sure, there are systems in place to society running smoothly. And yes, those systems aren't designed for the masses to prosper. However, nothing stops an individual from excelling if he or she has a plan and discipline. The Democratic Party likes to give its supporters an easy out, always pointing outward on why you're not successful.
So blacks in the US have not fluorished as other races, but it isn't because of racism, but rather affirmative action by people who blame it on racism (manipulation by the federal government).
The problem was black people glorifying the slums and ghetto, elevating them to authentic status whereas successful articulate blacks where called uncler Tom's of villified as Oreos , black outside white inside.
So …..at what point is this the content of our caricature?
There is no such thing as "fatherlessness." Every child has a father! There are just too many neglectful or abandoning fathers.
"Like father – Like son" applies also when the father abandons his children.

This is stupid and backwards. People who are better off financially are often able to maintain relationships and marriages not the other way around. Those people would have been financially better off had they been married or not.
Asian people often come to this country with a little money and also receive help from the government to start businesses that often receive cash money for which they do not pay all of the taxes required on. That is why it is common for Asian households to have safes filled with money. Asian people also do not face the job discrimination that many Black people do because of the stereotype that that Asians are smart.

I live where there are black Americans with ancestry as deep back as anyone, as well as black Caribbeans & Africans who just got here. There is a startling difference in culture not based on race, but simply on ethic, choice, & purpose. We all have genetic differences, it's culture, experience & teaching not genes that motivates us to be who we are.
Thomas Sowell is a true intellectual based in facts and is the exact opposite of the phonies infecting the colleges and universities.
The toxic culture is tied to the race, since we see toxic culture in Africa too, and anywhere else with sizeable African population. Just because there is a small minority of blacks who don't subscribe to it, it doesn't mean it's just a culture thing.
Look at muslims – 65% support or empathize with terrorism. I'd say it's similar with blacks, which is why Islam is more of a dark skinned based religion.
This person has forgotten how black peoples have been mistreated since they were stolen and brought here as slaves and as someone’s possession…As slaves they were overworked with no pay except food so they could survive for more hard labor…They were beaten and tortured and abused verbally physically emotionally and Spiritually…Even after the civil war where Hundreds of thousands Americans lost their lives fighting for the freedom of the slaves thank God Good prevailed…Still the black man had to pull themselves up off the canvas…Racist and Hateful people organized to keep the black peoples down they wanted to keep them separate away from white society…So as a consequence black peoples were never given the opportunity to learn and excel in school they were never given the opportunity to get a decent job so they could buy homes and things they needed for their families…Black peoples were never afforded proper Healthcare for their families…How did You expect them to turn out?..It’s only been in the last few decades blacks have been given a fairly equal opportunity to learn and given the opportunity to jobs and housing they never had before…This change came about because black leaders such as Martin Luther king Jr a minister and activist along with other strong black leaders lead the revolution of change for the betterment of America as a whole…They put their lives on the line!!!Yes and many of them lost their lives fighting for the rights of their people…If someone can sit around talking philosophical jargon about why the black community is struggling why not get up and do something about it!..

Yes, confirmantion bias is real and works both ways. You look for evidence that debunks inflenuce of racism on poverty while the left looks for the opposite.
Family income is not the only predictor of poverty. What do you say about the discriminatory reagan anti-drug law of 1986 and how it disproportionately incarcerated black men. He seems ro blame everything on the social policies of LBJ, which by the way i do not support. What about the closure of most inner city technical skill trainings that most blacks relied on to earn a living without needing to get a college degree. How did that influence black poverty?

Sowell is an impressive and innovative writer and reseacher. I disagree with his argument most of the time, but I don't often doubt his earnestness.
Racism is a scapegoat for much more serious problems. Sowell's book examines these problems in detail.
