Election 2024 – Ghana Armed Forces Deploy Troops To Support Police Ahead Of Polls

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced the deployment of military personnel to strategic locations to support the Ghana Police Service (GPS) in maintaining peace and security during the December 7, 2024, Presidential and Parliamentary elections. The move is part of efforts to ensure a smooth and orderly electoral process.

In a statement issued on December 6, 2024, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director-General of Public Relations, clarified that the deployment is not a cause for alarm. He assured the public that military personnel would not be stationed at polling stations. Instead, their role will be limited to providing standby support, with the GPS maintaining primary responsibility for election security. The military will only intervene if requested by the police.

“The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) wishes to inform the public that the deployment of its personnel to designated locations in support of the Ghana Police Service for the peaceful conduct of the upcoming elections is ongoing,” the statement read. It further urged citizens not to panic if they observe military movements within their communities.
“The military will only be deployed upon request by the GPS. This approach ensures that the elections proceed smoothly and peacefully while maintaining law and order.”
