We as a country are the nicest people, but they’re right… as a tourist in any country you’re always gonna find scams and weird people so just be careful with that.
I can't begin to tell you how many times I have been cheated in Costa Rica. And it's just because I'm a gringo. Dozens and dozens of times. From the guy that cuts our grass to restaurants to our landlord to the dentist who quoted different amounts for a local and for a gringo. On and on. Dozens of times. In fact it is rare if you find someone that is honest. The people of Costa Rica are dishonest. So much for pura vida.

We went to Manuel Antonio today. Got scammed by paying $40 more for tickets because we didn’t pre- purchase our entrance tickets. The guide was not professional. He kept being rude to a tourist.
I'm cancelling my trip to Costa Rica after learning that this is how it is all over the country now. Ticos should be ashamed

Having lived in Costa Rica for 3 1/2 years, videos like this bug me because of the misleading impression they give. Yes, the fake parking arse holes at Manuel Antonio suck, and most car rental places are not transparent in their fees. However, that is pure BS that it is common for establishments to add things to your bill (albeit gringo pricing almost always occurs when prices are negotiable). After having spent considerable time in 9 different Latin countries, I have experienced fewer scams in Costa Rica than most countries.

There's no custom to tip in Costa Rica. That was introduced by gringos in the 90s.
Been here 6 years and have traveled the entire country several times. This hasn’t never happened to me once. Just use common sense and you can get by just fine.

I'm from California and have lived here in Costa Ricas West Cost from Samara to Playa Coco for 15 years. I have never once been charged for an extra item on my bill at a restaurant. Trust me, I check my receipts every time (I was in the restaurant business in Cali for 30 years.) So my only thought is that you guys have SUCKERS written all over your face.
Best advice I can give is, go back to the States!
Or learn how to adapt and wipe the word SUCKER off your face before travelling to another country.

Went to CR for the first time in 2009. Then again in 2014. And then again this year 2024. Still love it but it’s definitely more developed and much more expensive now

Extra items added to one’s bill, or more expensive items than one actually purchased, are a regular occurrence here, ALWAYS check your bill before paying… I’m a local in the capital here and it happens to me regularly…. So yes, good advice.

That is a shame I had a bad experience with a tourist because I charged him one more product but I was going to give it when he told me he didn’t want the offer of two hotdogs which only sells like that at that moment. So I told him I am sorry let’s do this I give you the money for the second hot dog since it was my mistake. But I think now I see way he was feeling uncomfortable. The thing is I had to pay for everything the business may consider a lost. And he thought I was taking $2 from him but it was just that I couldn’t erase the offer and I was gonna give him two hot dogs. He started to say people in Costa Rica are like that, that we want to robe the tourists and I was so stressed I consider to call the police.But is kinda understandable he thought I was getting $2 but thing is I had to pay for 8 sodas and 6 hot dogs at that business just because I didn’t want to work there anymore it was awful a camera is in your back and follows you and you have a line and your boss ok the phone asking you to remove one plate from the sink even if is there just one minute. I am sorry this happened to you, it sounds on purpose. Hopefully you have better experiences in further visits I love when people travel to our beautiful country.
