To answer a question to why casuals didn't watch overwatch league.
Hello! Im someone who recently quit playing overwatch, was a competitive player playing both Overwatch 1 and 2, and someone who actually enjoys watching Esports. CS:GO in the past, and StarCraft 2 for many years.
I've tried getting into Overwatch League, but the truth is, this game is just terrible for eaports. It's a very fast paced game, with a lot of flashing lights, abilities that teleport, move, shove, create new things etc. And every single player has access to them. Whilst watching fights, its nearly impossible to know which side is winning, which side is losing and what exactly is happening.
The biggest thing for me however it was how difficult it was to apprentice the genius, innovation and skill of the players. The truth is, if I wanted to see some Overwatch gameplay, I would go to either a content creator, like yourself or Frogger, who has created something much more entertaining by editing, adding jokes and delivering it in lengths that I could watch to the end, or I would play the game myslef. The only reason I go to pro matches, is to see something cool, something no one else can achieve.
And let's take StarCraft for an example. Pros there do hundreds of imputs per minute, operating an economy, moving large armies, and making constant decisions. This is impressive. Additionally, commentators there are also pretty good players that can explain the strategies, and useful HUDs that tell me always who is in the lead with the minerals, supply etc. Sprinkle into that the fact that it's a strategy game, with tons of unusual, weird and funny tactics and you get a show that's something speciall.
And, with Overwatch… Fights almost all look the same, there is rarely any unusual and flashy strategies, or if they exist they are hard to spot from a casual point of view. The fact that a pro team picked unusual heros is not that special.
I only recently started enjoying some Overwatch pro content, but still done by creators, either breaking certain plays, slowing them down, and showing them step by step, or highlights with some of the funniest commentary I've ever heard. Wathcing a live match seems like such a boring prospect to me.
