After participating in the capture of Kismayo in September 2006, he became governor of Lower Juba, Middle Juba, and Gedo (now known as Jubaland) until the Islamic Courts withdrew deep into southern Somalia following the Ethiopian invasion in December 2006. While Ethiopian forces in Kismayo narrowly escaped US airstrikes, he emerged as the sole surviving soldier of the units despite being wounded by shrapnel. Madobe fled towards the Kenyan border, was captured, and later treated in an Ethiopian hospital. He was imprisoned in a prison camp under Ethiopian rule, and after Ethiopia withdrew from Somalia in January 2009, Madobe was released and joined the new government of Sharif Sheikh Ahmed. On 4 April 2009, he announced his resignation from parliament, saying he had only joined to get out of Ethiopian prison, and warned the Sharif government to be wary of foreign conspiracies.
Hizbul Islam edit Madobe later joined Hizbul Islam, and became the local governor of Kismayo. In 2009, the city of Kismayo was jointly occupied by two factions of Hizbul Islam (the Raaskaambooni Movement and the Muskar Aanoole Movement) and Al-Shabaab. After Al-Shabaab appointed a governing council, apart from other factions, it was denounced by Hizbul Islam, and in October 2009, Hizbul Islam forces led by Madoobe fought Al-Shabaab in the city of Kismayo. Later, after a dispute between Hizbul Islam and Al-Shabaab, the Federal Government of Somalia, led by Ahmed Madoobe, Abu Mansur Romow, accused Al-Shabaab of being responsible for the violence in the conflict.
