Nigeria is one of the most diverse countries in the world — with an estimated 400 different ethnic groups. Despite its national borders, tribalism remains deeply rooted in Nigerian society today, sparking insecurity and unrest. But many Gen Z-ers want to break free from being valued based on their ethnicity alone. Edith Kimani brings the…

  1. In America we don't have Tribalism and we always wonder why African come to America and they separate themselves from Black American. No wonder the whole Nation of Africa is falling apart and all Africans are running from their Nation. A nation divided will not stand

  2. You guys erring all your dirty laundery on a german owned news media is just funny.. You can't set up your own independent african news media and shape your own narratives? Second embarrasment

  3. Tribalism and corruption are Nigeria's downfall as a south African Nigerian say we are xenophobic but at least we are united religion tolerant so are culture tolerant Wich is better pick your poison?

  4. Tribalism ruined my home country of Ethiopia. Please let's fight this disease in Africa. Keep on fighting Nigeria. Humanity will ultimately prevail.🙏✊🇳🇬

  5. I am confused as to who nigerians actually like… You fight with your own tribes. You come to america and look down on us as if you had a unity where you came from. Please get it together

  6. For the record, Bayelsa is predominantly Ijaw and Ijaw is not a small tribe. The ijaws are over 15 million people in Nigeria. The ijaws are in Ondo, delta, rivers, Akwa Ibom, Edo and some other states. All the ijaws need to do is to assert themselves more. Thank you and great job to the moderator and all the participants. One thing I did not hear is how the low minded politicians use tribalism to manipulate the gullible populace to further their greed. This needs to be emphasized more so that they will know that the people are aware of their evil intentions. The national orientation is a hypocritical organization which exist only in name.

  7. great debate with respectable insights. To add up, i'll recommend my book Identity, Purpose and Process, an unravelling piece on how diverging identities can be maximised for collective growth.

  8. Pre colonial Igbos never fought any War amongst themselves or their neighbors … they were so peaceful until the colonial masters came in

  9. Federal Character over the years has been used to promote incompetence and mediocrity. It should be scrapped and Everything should be done on Merit and you see how Fast and Far Nigeria would grow.

And again, Nigeria should delete state and Local govt. of origin from their forms and work with everyone as a Nigerian.

    Thank You.

  10. I’m from a minority tribe
Which doesn’t fall in the three major languages.

I’m a Northerner, not a Hausa. I got tired of educating the young Nigerians abroad on that.
I am proudly Nigerian and I love my people from the south, east, west and the north.
We are Nigerians, home and abroad.

Nigerian young people need to study history and geography, travel more.
I’ve been to almost 30 States in Nigeria including the FCT.

  11. Interesting education on tribalism for me; all the way from black American USA (Missouri.)
All we know is that Nigerians here in the Medical arena they are God Geniuses with amazing and creative skills they have been inventors, smart and prideful having skills with great knowledge.
Love Nigerians anyway any TRIBE❤ love your podcast.❤❤💯🤛🏾✌🏾👀🍎

  12. Somehow the inappropriateness of the word "tribe", which the moderator tried to bring up, was not pursued.
The word tribe is a colonial and racist construct which is highly derogatory and only used for the colonies. Europeans, who are the colonialists, use the term "ethnic group" for their own people.
It is high time that Africans should take decolonisation seriously, even in our use of language and discourses!

  13. Also tribe and tribalism focus on the 5-15% of things that are different between ethnicities. But if we talk about culture we realize we have 75-85% similarities. Question of focus.

  14. I think the only thing this proved is that we still don’t have solid definition for what it is to be Nigerian and what unity looks like, politically, socioeconomically or geopolitically, even religion. We still got 99 problems and the main one is identity. Solutions: 1/education both of one’s own culture and other cultures (minimum 9 total), compulsory to learn at least two major languages (non English, not including own) fluently 2/ because you can’t force unity, there needs to be open debate politically about Nigerian identity what it means politically etc etc In other words go back to drawing board. Hold regional/state and national referendum – if we can come up with vision that 85% of population agrees to so be it. If not there should be path for regions to secede. We didn’t create Nigeria voluntarily that’s was British, so why do we assume that “Nigeria” will work?! Nation is like marriage you should come together voluntarily you should be able to leave peacefully voluntarily.

  15. No! Tribe is a negative colonial conjuncture to describe African ethnic nationalities. If tribe is a good word, why don’t we have English tribe? German tribe? French Tribe? Can you imagine what will happen if we lump Germany, England and France as one country and impose Scottish as their national language? We will immediately have a 3rd and 4th world war simultaneously 😅😅😅.
I think we are suffering from the residue of post slavery, post colonial trauma…..where our identities were bastardized and we are hanging to it now as a life saving devise. The young people are making great strides, they should continue, but they should be more original by bringing together the best of each and all of us…., because we tend to copy the negatives and that is why we are not moving foreword.
Finally, I do not like the word minority tribe…. No one is a minority, every identity is unique and important…it is something those of us from the so called larger ethnic groups should respect more. I perfectly understand that young woman who is passionate about her identity, it is important for all of us to learn to respect other people’s identity, that is the starting point of overcoming ‘tribalism’
Well done to the interviewer! Good job!

  16. Very little southeastern representation. We can’t get past tribalism without talking about the Nigerian government literally making Biafrans starve to death! We don’t teach this in schools

  17. Nigeria is like a comedy of errors. There are things that should have been done in a certain way that were done rather shabbily. The NYSC program for example should have been a three year program designed to bring the best out of the youth, not one designed specifically to foster so-called national unity. People automatically unite when they have a common goal like being in a military reserve, playing sports or working together to solve particular or myriads of problems. Just giving someone a three month paramilitary course and then sending them to work in some remote area of the country is not a well thought out idea.

  18. I was very impressed by the input of each and every young fellow Nigerian featured in this video. Even when IKECHUKWU DANIEL OKONWEZE and EMY JOSEPHS disagreed briefly, they did so respectfully. Ikechukwu Okonweze is (straight up) my kinda guy. But, Emy Josephs is my kinda girl too….a firecracker 😂😂😂.
On the whole, I'd say that these intelligent young Nigerians gave a good account of themselves. It goes to show that we are intelligent and loving people. Nigeria is so blessed…… from whatever perspective you wanna define the word "blessed" . Nigeria will be unstoppable, but only if we can find lasting solutions to our two GREATEST problems…… Tribalism, and corrupt government.
The guy who talked about the "Kolanut" brought tears to my eyes. He ( basically) gave a very simple example of how we need to be integrated and united.
I love this video SO MUCH. I'd like to bow, and duff my hat to everyone that participated here. Love 'n respect to y'all…. from Hassan Lawal.

  19. Tribalism has ruined this country. Our current whack ass president is a direct result of tribalism because if we were united he would have been booted out
