Brutal Dictators – Africa's Last Emperor – Jean Bedel Bokassa – (Documentary)

The coronation of Emperor Bokassa the First in 1977 was one of Africa’s more bizarre spectacles. A lavish extravaganza based on the coronation of Napoleon, Jean Bedel Bokassa saw himself as the new royalty of the Central African Republic.
Brutal and vain in equal measure, here is a look at one of Africa’s forgotten dictators.

If you would…

  1. All these African dictators seem so childlike and insecure. They give themselves with ridiculous titles, uniforms and medals. They try to make themselves feel so special but they know they’re just ruling over impoverished failed states. They wanted so badly to be like the European monarchs who ruled their former colonies.

  2. I would bet money that every single person who praises Bokassa now is someone who had some kind of power under his regime. They're NOTHING now, so of course they want to go back to their glory days.

  3. I bet whites really miss the apartheid days…now there biggest fear is their daughters riding BBC until they're paraplegic. Slot floppies and that innit!? wicked fun days them was… Right?

  4. What I find interesting is that many dignitaries and members of other royal families refused to attend the coronation of Bokassa, claiming it was all an illegitimate circus. I wonder why it is okay for certain families in Europe to have seized power and continue to retain thrones, yet when some upstart in Africa does the exact same thing, they are labeled illegitimate and clownish. It sounds a bit racist to me. What makes Charlie Mountbatten-Windsor of the United Kingdom any more legitimate or fit to reign than Jean Bedel-Bokassa and his successors?

  5. A very good example of why Africans shouldn't be allowed to run their own countries. With the notable exception of the brutal Belgians, most African countries were better off as colonies of European powers. – Yes, I know that sounds like a terrible thing to say, but I'm not wrong, am I?. Are Zimbabwe, South Africa, Angola, Uganda, etc, better places than they were before independence?
I dare say millions of older Africans consider the days of colonialism as a time of order and stability and preferable to the chaos they have now.
