It’s been more than 24 hours since fire broke out at Broadwalk Urban Village in Midrand. It is still unclear what caused the blaze.
The deadly inferno swept through the residential complex claiming one life and injuring several others.
The blaze destroyed around 60 units in the 130-apartment complex.

This was not a normal residential building – it seems it was converted from an office park. Worse, it seems the building had no firewalls separating the units; the walls don't rise beyond the wallplate – this you can see even from the street. (This is probably the reason why the whole first floor was gutted). I don't think the building was compliant with building fire regulations, I suspect particularly for a multi-residential.
