BREAKING THE SILENCE: Abortion Rights in Kenya – BBC Africa Eye documentary

Across the world, debates are raging about access to safe abortion. Complications from unsafe, backstreet procedures are a leading cause of maternal death in developing countries. In Kenya, where almost two-thirds of pregnancies are unintended, unregulated terminations are estimated to claim the lives of over 2,000 women every year.

  1. Goes to show the deep hypocrisy in our societies. If you cannot talk about sex before a person starts you cannot stop an abortion. Having a child should be a joyous experience and so no one should stand between women and service delivery.

Happy to see my former boss Dr. Ernest Nyamato.

Ladies those girls need to complete school to make better lives for themselves and their families

  2. Do these so called "crisis support centers" inform the pregnant girls of all their options they are entitled to by law?? If not, then they are doing more harm than good to these girls.

  3. @ 3:30 in the video is says 1 in 3 women in Kenya have been raped! Kenya has "crisis pregnancy centers" & people like Monica to pressure girls against having an abortion, but are there any healthcare clinics to provide birth control & teach girls how to avoid unwanted pregnancies? Monica claims the girls make up their own minds about what to do concerning their pregnancy, but does she ever tell them that abortion is legal & available from other resources? Does Monica doesn't that even after getting married, a woman may want birth control to avoid getting pregnant? Having children they can't afford to provide for is the greatest factor in keeping African women poor & under-educated. Thanks BBC for posting this video.

  4. Abortion is not good especially when we look at it in a spiritual perspective,i wish those doing abortions should be shown in a microscope the way you kill a child and remove it from your body its soo traumatizing

  5. What is the motivation for all these lies and damage to a dead great Mam's reputation. you will Gail as always.we know him too. We're with him closely too and I tell you on
Authority that TB was genuine and blessed the world. You are all in error and better repent.

  6. Thank you for this very timely piece. I worry that the burying head in the sand approach by our policymakers is our undoing. Arguments on either side of this conversation should be informed by evidence and lived experiences.

  7. Yoh, if you think that pie chart is wrong then look at just your region alone. Abortions truly is the number 1 cause of death annually. I'm a Kenyan and I do not stand for abortion or LGBT. There are truly many reasons to abort but unless its medical you should not.

  8. The main issue here isn't abortion but access to family planning where you are provided with contraceptives and other things to protect the women.
