If the SSC (Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn) is not being used as a political tool by someone with personal ambitions to gain power—as often happens whenever election preparations begin in Mogadishu, and this kind of political posturing becomes widespread—the truth of the matter is that Somali unity is fundamentally based on the reality that Somalis are organized into five regions, and Somaliland is one of those five. Somaliland is waiting for the other four to come to a mutual agreement, as its people have previously been disappointed. Therefore, the people of the SSC region are also citizens of Somaliland. Anyone who does not call for Somali unity when addressing a young man from Buuhoodle living near the border or from Jigjiga, and who claims that the Somaliland soldier is dividing Somalis or that it is even permissible to wage jihad against them, is in my opinion spreading falsehoods and only giving lip service to the idea of unity.
