Botswana and Belgium enjoy strong bilateral relations, particularly in trade, with Botswana's diamond exports to Belgium being a major factor, and both countries are exploring further cooperation in areas like finance, digitalization, and infrastructure.

    Here's a more detailed look:

    Trade:

Botswana's exports to the EU, mainly diamonds, are heavily focused on Belgium.

In 2022, diamonds accounted for 95% of Botswana's exports to the EU, which reached €1.42 billion, with a significant portion destined for Belgium.

In 2023, Belgium exported $80.7 million to Botswana, with diamonds being the primary export.

Other Belgian exports to Botswana include packaged medicaments and frozen vegetables.

    Diplomatic and Political Relations:

The two countries have a history of cordial relations and are committed to promoting human rights, democracy, good governance, and the rule of law.

Botswana's Vice President, Mr. Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe, met with Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Mr. Jan Jambon, to discuss enhancing bilateral relations and expanding cooperation.

President Duma Gideon Boko met with the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Croo, to discuss bilateral relations and the diamond industry, including G7 sanctions on Russian diamonds.

Botswana's Ambassador to Belgium, Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba, presented her credentials to King Philippe of Belgium, further solidifying the diplomatic ties.

    Areas of Cooperation:

The two countries are exploring cooperation in the financial sector, with a focus on private sector development, job creation, digitalization, and infrastructure development.

The Flanders region in Belgium has expressed interest in forging relations with Botswana in the diamond industry and in areas like waste water management.

Botswana and Belgium also cooperate in mining, agriculture, tourism, and education.

Botswana’s foreign policy has always been neutral. This man is losing it. Tomorrow Botswana will be used against BRICS countries like South Africa just like Ukraine is being used against Russia. 😢
