Ugliness:- events that challenge our values and, in truth, the very idea of a viable value system stalks human society like a shadow in the sun. The past two hundred years alone has seen the following sources of that existential despair:
– the near-extermination of the indigenous peoples of two of the Earth's four fully inhabited continents;
– King Leopold's mountain of severed hands in the Belgian Congo;
– the sheer waste of life in the trench warfare of WW1;
– Nazi death squads and death camps;
– the man-made firestorms of Hamburg and Dresden;
– Hiroshima and Nagasaki;
– the Nakba of 1948;
– the American bombing of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia;
– the Rwandan genocide;
– ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia;
– the fabricated 2003 Iraq War and its aftermath; and
– the new low in America's imperial geo-political games of shamelessly spending Ukrainian lives to buy Russian deaths.
That list is, necessarily, only from one cultural perspective and – even on that basis – is not exhaustive. The Human world, then, has ALWAYS been a truly ugly place.
Who then could have guessed that it was possible for it to become SO MUCH UGLIER in just the six months since October 2023?
