Banana Brandy – Making Ugandan Waragi (Moonshine)

We prepare Ugandan Waragi (War Gin) a distilled spirit of banana wine. For more info on the distillation process check out our other new video https://youtu.be/RKzL2tM3qBc

Note that in some states it is illegal to distill ethanol unless you obtain a permit.

  1. This was really worth the time. I've never actually looked at distillation, I don't think it was taught in our school. I'm pretty sure make distilled alcohol is illegal up here but I'll give it a look see.

  2. how long was the rest period for the alpha or did you just wait for the temp to go down to 140? i thought it needs at least 1hr same for the beta no? btw you should have started by doing a 1hr rest at 140 before anything else to allow the inulin in the bananas to convert into fructose then proceeded with the alpha and beta

  3. To seperate the methonol from the alcohol I use a spoon and a lighter the Methanol burns with a yellow flame and the alcohol with a translucent blue flame I constantly scoop burn and check the flame on the spoon until the flow registers with a translucent blue flame and keep the rest. I collect more spoon samples until the output will no longer burn or the blue flame is diminished or the output will not light with a lighter on the spoon. Dont throw away the Methanol if you experience cold winters and drive a vechicle, it makes marvelous screen wash fluid and will defrost any windscreen in the coldest of weather.

  4. What a pleasant experience to watch. I like how he knows exactly what he is on about other distilling content confuses me. I'm still not confident enough to try and make any so il stick to watching someone else also I've heard of people causing serious harm when distilling when they themselves don't know enough. Great watch 😎👍

  5. Always add the tails to the next run as it helps stabilise the output due to a higher volume of alcohol to water. It also slows down the jump from one alcohol from another seen from the thermometer temperature. The ethanol makes great fire lighter fuel so don’t throw it away but be careful because it burns invisible

  6. I think ugandans do not peel the bananas for waragi, I suppose the result is the same. Also you don't trample them with your feet which I guess is a bit more hygenic.

  7. "…not much left over to blend.." 🤪 Really enjoy watching these "older" episodes. Loved the bare-bones, hands-on kitchen table feel of the older shows. Not much a fan of the newer "studio" look with expensive microphones and such. However, to each, his or her own… ❤ Still great stuff! Thanks!
