  1. This is definitely a reflection is many African cultures and homes and this spills into many marriages or relationships in African homes as well or with the elderly and the young.

  2. Indeed critical thinking is lacking. The culture of not questioning adults and people in authority suppressed our development even before the colonial era. Although Western education brought science and its logical approach, we at the same time inherited foreign religions with a supposedly almighty God so that we did not need to think much to achieve anything. We did the opposite of what Japan and China did. They accepted science and rejected religion from the West while we did the reverse. While science has discovered that man originated in Africa, the Bible says we originated from Abraham in the Middle East!!

  3. When we don't question bad decisions, we are bound to follow bad actions. In fact, it is in our interest to ask questions, why, because it about survival and growth. Everything is questionable! This is why critical thinking is essential! I believe critical thinking starts with me and us!

  4. It’s also about passing on information through the generations. When you ask some Nigerian uncles/aunts how they achieved their success the response goes something like “we thank God”. That is not a useful or actionable information for the next generation to carry on with. Westerners will tell their young ones about investing, socialising with the right people etc.

  5. Beautifully articulated🔥🔥🔥 As a therapist this is something I'm very aware causes a restriction/block to helping people and particular black people heal from their trauma. It's more challenging for them to heal in many ways because they battle with asking themselves those internal life transforming questions.

  6. Discredit the church, the superstitious lot and challenge the elders. And invest more in the humanities, science, research and logic. And encourage the youth to ignore the old folks and do their own research. African are drowning because the old people still control the centres of power and learning. And still insist on passing discredited ideas to the youth. Discrimination against the old when it comes to development and scientific work should be instituted. Professorship and leadership should be capped at age 65.

  7. i viewed wode maya live video today where i think it was vennesa a youtuber who said some businesses would not let her film there….but she has 1000s of followers surely this is free advertising for them….I thought this was crazy….critical thinking would help in this situation or just plain old business sense.

  8. I am glad I came across this video Phrankleen. I tried correcting one guy called parara who does mock news. And to my greatest surprise he wasn’t matured at all.
He was talking about a lady that died in the UK and claimed the lady’s name was removed from a mortgage by her ex husband. He also claimed the couple had a secret divorce. I was like wait a minute that doesn’t add up. This guy tried to belittle me by calling me names.

  9. The woman is not even permitted to provide her husband with insight about how he may sexually pleasure her. In other words, the woman is not expected to help her husband to understand what bring her to orgasm. According to my African sister, many African women never experience an orgasm because of this.

  10. Great post Phrankleen! I had same discussion on several occasions with my husband. It was about the extreme lack of critical thinking amongst Africans and how our culture is toxic to a certain extent. To the point of limiting progress and innovation. Some decisions made by some elders in the community could make one ask if we are soo demented. Yet, younger folks have NO RIGHT to dare question them because it is a form of disrespect or can attract a curse. Also, as we are told, seniors can never be wrong. Hmmmmm! Could the continent be lost? Could we ever recover or catch-up?

  11. Hi Phrankleen,
Excellent commentary. I am not Nigerian but I can tell you that black people all over the world are afraid to think critically.
Early in my marriage my mother and my wife had a verbal dispute. My wife called my mother a b$t@h. I was immediately nervous because I knew that my mother who was never kind to my wife would become even more difficult to deal with. As I processed the situation, I remembered that my mother was merely visiting us and would return home the next day . It also became apparent to me that my mother never treat my wife properly. I shut my mouth and stood by my wife .
Throughout my 25 years of marriage my mother has been unsupportive. Even when she isn’t giving me the silent treatment there’s anger just under the surface.
People try to use religion, coercion and when all else fails violence to control others .
Some people will despise you because you will not allow them to ruin your life.
Many of us refuse to use our critical thinking skills because we cannot handle where reason and logic may take us .
Many of us would be forced to admit that our families don’t have our best interest at heart. Others would have to admit that organized religion is a fraud and that they are being exploited by so called men of god. Furthermore, the claims of heaven being pushed by so called men of god would have to be called into question.
Thinking is just too painful .
If more young people would think about their parents and the motives of their parents they would have better lives .
Too many parents are allowed to ruin their children’s lives.
The struggle that a mother in law is having with her son’s wife may be her playing out her unresolved anger and frustrations.
Some of the worst treatment that I experience is at the hands of my mother. She cannot get the control that she wants ant it angers her .
Critical thinking is essential for our growth .

  12. I fully understand what you are saying, but, believe ya me that even some members of your family would be mad with you because of this video! Reason:-They have been conditioned to remember and conform but not think and reason! It's a Gigantic problem in our own part of the world. AFRICA!

  13. This is my favourite topic. European eduction is not concerned with African progress, which is why you have so many western educated Africans who look down on Africans. They are more likely to exploit their own people rather than find solutions that uplift.

  14. Christianity is the biggest deception in humanity. This pagan religion was created by the ruling Roman class to mentally cripple the masses and led to formation of the Catholic Church. It teaches African ppl to be weak, gullible, and pacifistic.
