South Africa has a word for this. It's called "coloured". Not to be confused with the American racial slur, "coloured" in South Africa refers to anyone of mixed race, predominantly those with a black-white mix and in many ways it's treated as it's own race separate from both.
Simply put, in South Africa, most African-Americans wouldn't even be considered black.
I wouldn't say that this is worthless knowledge. These facts can be used against racism. But we should really try to move on from a mindset that keeps our communities stuck. When one makes politics of race, it becomes a belief that has no bearing with reality. Science tells us that we came out of Africa a long time ago and set off on a journey that has taken us all to this very moment. Reality is so much more fascinating than anything we can make up. I find the colour of your and my skin far less interesting than the story of how we came to be.
