ANTANANARIVO: Madagascar Capital City Walk

Madagascar is an island nation, off the coast of southern Africa, in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The capital city is known as Antananarivo. With a population of nearly 1.5 million residents, it suffers from many of the same endemic problems as other developing countries — namely traffic, air pollution, sanitation and…

  1. I used to walk there, used to buy ice cream from those mobile stands, used to take those buses.I had an important exam at the school where the students came out. My mother used to bring us to a pastry shop nearby. Too much chaos compared to my Canadian city where I live now, but sweet memories indeed

  4. I was born and raised in Antananarivo and found my love there. I am very sorry to have left there. Now I live in a country that is much worse than Madagascar. I want to go back to the city of my childhood. Thank you!

  5. Anatanarivo / Tanarivo : (Indonesian Language)
    Tana = Tanah
    Tanana = Tanahnya
    Rivo = Ribu
    Tananarivo = Tanah Seribu /Land 1000 /Island 1000
    Madagascan ancestors from Indonesia
    Indonesia consists of 17500 islands

  6. It’s interesting that it doesn’t look “as bad” as the African cities we’re used to. For me, it looks like a mix of Asian and African cities, busy, crowded, lots of people on the streets. You can see that the infrastructure isn’t so bad, and that people aren’t exactly malnourished. Just an usual 3rd world country. It actually does remind me of some certain spots here jn Brazil.

  7. Seems a bit bizarre. Like South Park's depiction of Canada. The people all look extremely mixed, the place is bustling with commerce, the cars are all ancient. I have no idea what to make of the place, and the fact that there's millions of people on the island feels odd. The world is such a big place.

  9. Hi Rick,
    Thank you very much for this video, I’m planning to visit Madagascar shortly. Did you notice any safety issues while you were travelling in Madagascar? Seems like there are not too many tourists on the street.
