Let's consider the statement he made: I see people who are very wealthy in the wealthy community the hospital is in, and I see people who come for community or charitable service/treatment that are perhaps employed by these wealthy…

I find it amusing that there would be a distinction in one of the richest by GDP and per capita countries in the world they just gloss over such an easy to fix socio-economic disparity that doesn't even require socialism or communistic redistribution of that wealth it simply means implementing a service largely free of charge (or accessible universally) like the police, fire department, garbage collection or any other service.

I haven't finished the video, but in terms of obesity caused by poverty, and how Dr. Mike (Israetel) is noting that cheap food is usually unprocessed food: If you're poor, you probably have less time as well. If you have kids, work 1 or 2 jobs, single parent, etc, then frozen waffles that can be toasted in 30 seconds thats like 200+ calories drenched in 200+ calorie off brand syrup is way more time efficient than a home cooked meal. Saves time, but not calories. And time is more of a mitigating factor for poor people over worrying about the health profiles of the food you're consuming.

Dr. Mike brought up some good points about various priorities and values related to income/class. Dr. Ruby Payne did a lot of work looking at values and classes. Might shed some light here.

I don't know when the idea that people can't be blamed for their problems arose, or that it's counter productive, or any of that, but truth shouldn't be held back because it hurts someone's feelings. Hurt feelings are temporary and should be used for a catalyst for change once those feelings subside.

Do we have a different idea of what low trait conscientiousness means?

My understanding is it's basically a laid back person. And if we do agree then…

I really wish he would have went into what part of being a laid back easy going person makes them food driven to the point of being obese.

I'm a laid back person and of course have struggled with my weight my entire adult life. I have lost 100 pounds on three separate occasions. Usually once I hit 260 I lose weight. I'm 5'8". And I'm currently on my third weight loss journey in 15 years. I'm currently at 165. And I really don't want to go through this again. Now I'm terrified of eating more than 1200 calories a day. I'm also lifting weights, but don't feel like I'm getting much out of it since my calories are so low. I have a mental block to eating now.

Dr Mike (who I'll differentiate from Doctor Mike) thinks in entirely too many absolutes. Maybe he had a bad experience with bad educators, but in very liberal education areas I definitely learned about the balance of nature vs nurture and the importance of studying genetic bias. If you start to talk about using eugenics and using that as a basis of superiority that's when Dr Mike's supposition about what people call him becomes true.

Social mobility is the biggest argument against Israetel’s conjecture that poorer people are mostly predisposed to traits that will keep them that way. The system in the US is set up to maintain poverty amongst the poor. Countries with better education/healthcare/social programs than the US have significantly better social mobility than the US.

I love both doctor mikes but big mike has a defeatist attitude
Stress has a profound effect on genetics which is specifically why you should improve the environment
A better environment will improve life and further from the line, impact the genetics of future generations. It may not be instant but it will be a good investment down the line. The more stress you remove the better the future genetics will be
A better environment means we can empower those with good genetics held back by bad circumstances
But what about those with dog water genetics eho are doomed no matter what? Bro you answered your own question. Theyre doomed, move on. You can't save everyone

1:02:20 Here Doctor Mike is taking the Causal Approach, which is the only approach one should take regarding any Treatment effect in medicine. The guest is too focused on correlational studies and extrapolating to the entire population which is a common issue in the medical literature and is a indication of a lack of statistical comprehension.

Here in Finland, the correlation between poverty and obesity almost doesn't exist. USA then again has a massive obesity problem, even your president is an obese MOFO – though I do admit, that in the 90s we had a fatter president than your current one… Just makes me think…

This comment isn't meant to be the greatest thoughts ever on the subject, but still… Can't help wondering why obesity is such a massive problem in some countries, while much smaller in the others.

I posit that learned behavior is more prolonged and solidified into adulthood. If a child only knows one lifestyle, i would say they grow into living that kind of lifestyle as it is normal, and learning otherwise is difficult🤔🤔

What it sounds like is if someone is "nice" it's ok that they make stupid decisions, but if they are mean they should be held accountable. Sounds like the male/female dichotomy 🤣🤣

I would say naivete is more deadly than realistic

How does anyone have a bias if they don’t have free will? Now he’s blaming liberals for poor obesity. SMH. Why does he teach if there is no free will? How can someone make an impulsive decision if they don’t have free will? His argument is unraveling with each sentence.

Damn, Dr. Mike Israetel had me the whole time until he undercut his entire point. He just contradicted his entire argument. Dr. Mike Israetel spent an hour and a half explaining that genetics determine what we're going to do. Smart people do smart things, not emotional things. Then at 1:26:21, he canceled his entire argument as he said smart people aren't researching genetics because they are too liberal and it makes them emotionally uncomfortable. If smart people do smart things, and not emotional things, then how are smart people too afraid to do smart things because of their political affiliation? Also, because Dr Mike Israetel revealed his clear and emotional bias against left leaning America, does that mean he lacks the Trait Conscientiousness? He's now railing against liberals, clearly politically biased himself. I had so much hope for him.
