Let's consider the statement he made: I see people who are very wealthy in the wealthy community the hospital is in, and I see people who come for community or charitable service/treatment that are perhaps employed by these wealthy…
I find it amusing that there would be a distinction in one of the richest by GDP and per capita countries in the world they just gloss over such an easy to fix socio-economic disparity that doesn't even require socialism or communistic redistribution of that wealth it simply means implementing a service largely free of charge (or accessible universally) like the police, fire department, garbage collection or any other service.
I haven't finished the video, but in terms of obesity caused by poverty, and how Dr. Mike (Israetel) is noting that cheap food is usually unprocessed food: If you're poor, you probably have less time as well. If you have kids, work 1 or 2 jobs, single parent, etc, then frozen waffles that can be toasted in 30 seconds thats like 200+ calories drenched in 200+ calorie off brand syrup is way more time efficient than a home cooked meal. Saves time, but not calories. And time is more of a mitigating factor for poor people over worrying about the health profiles of the food you're consuming.
In Dr. Mike's (Israetel) defense, I like Prime, tastes good, and I didnt know Logan Paul made it. I actually dislike Logan Paul but I dont care enough to stop buying Prime lol.
Dr. Mike brought up some good points about various priorities and values related to income/class. Dr. Ruby Payne did a lot of work looking at values and classes. Might shed some light here.
I don't know when the idea that people can't be blamed for their problems arose, or that it's counter productive, or any of that, but truth shouldn't be held back because it hurts someone's feelings. Hurt feelings are temporary and should be used for a catalyst for change once those feelings subside.
Is that the aim? Placing the blame?
Do we have a different idea of what low trait conscientiousness means?
My understanding is it's basically a laid back person. And if we do agree then…
I really wish he would have went into what part of being a laid back easy going person makes them food driven to the point of being obese.
I'm a laid back person and of course have struggled with my weight my entire adult life. I have lost 100 pounds on three separate occasions. Usually once I hit 260 I lose weight. I'm 5'8". And I'm currently on my third weight loss journey in 15 years. I'm currently at 165. And I really don't want to go through this again. Now I'm terrified of eating more than 1200 calories a day. I'm also lifting weights, but don't feel like I'm getting much out of it since my calories are so low. I have a mental block to eating now.
at 12:00 he makes the mistake of assuming that people have coherent thinking. They mostly do not. Not when it comes to economics and politics.
I love Mike but my question is, why do other countries have lower obesity than us?
Dr Mike (who I'll differentiate from Doctor Mike) thinks in entirely too many absolutes. Maybe he had a bad experience with bad educators, but in very liberal education areas I definitely learned about the balance of nature vs nurture and the importance of studying genetic bias. If you start to talk about using eugenics and using that as a basis of superiority that's when Dr Mike's supposition about what people call him becomes true.
both are brainwashed
Social mobility is the biggest argument against Israetel’s conjecture that poorer people are mostly predisposed to traits that will keep them that way. The system in the US is set up to maintain poverty amongst the poor. Countries with better education/healthcare/social programs than the US have significantly better social mobility than the US.
I love both doctor mikes but big mike has a defeatist attitude
Stress has a profound effect on genetics which is specifically why you should improve the environment
A better environment will improve life and further from the line, impact the genetics of future generations. It may not be instant but it will be a good investment down the line. The more stress you remove the better the future genetics will be
A better environment means we can empower those with good genetics held back by bad circumstances
But what about those with dog water genetics eho are doomed no matter what? Bro you answered your own question. Theyre doomed, move on. You can't save everyone
Anyone who doesn’t believe nepotism is a thing doesn’t have the full picture of what it means to be low income or have less resources in my eyes
47:26 Dr.Mike stutering worth the search
I have to disagree with Dr Mike saying that less intelligent people tend to be against gay and trans rights. In fact I would argue the opposite to be true.
This was an awesome conversation, literally everybody that listened and participated won here
Two highly intelligent men sparing back and forth. So hot.
It was the tan
Blue lobster, lat spread fart noise
No, its not insane to order online.. Jesus! its just a matter of effect of the cause they did first! Put into a place, made an online announcement, pay some people to deliver it to you… man.. common!
Fat people mostly got that way by their own hands… literally😂. when they are suffering the chronic effects later in life that they adopt circular reasoning to shift things like diabetes being a reason they are obese despite the opposite being the case.
prime is the nastiest thing in that whole space LoL. It , at least in my area, has a tiny space on the above eye level shelves …. it may still be popular elsewhere but the fad has passed here.
Watching this as an obese poor person is tough but I'm not mad.
Wegovy fixed my broken brain. I’m done with feeling like my fat is my fault
This guy looks like dan bonginos long lost brother
1:02:20 Here Doctor Mike is taking the Causal Approach, which is the only approach one should take regarding any Treatment effect in medicine. The guest is too focused on correlational studies and extrapolating to the entire population which is a common issue in the medical literature and is a indication of a lack of statistical comprehension.
I love listening to two men argue about topics that neither is an expert in. I get enough of this at every family gathering thank you.
On the Prime thing, I think it's a very american drink. Here in Norway, I haven't met anyone that thought it was good and the stores did a big outsell campaign where they sold it dirtcheap because noone bought it.
It’s such a lazy liberal talking point to say the world is powered by nepotism. Jake Paul is right, brainwashed, indoctrinated sheep doctor.
I’ve never seen someone make an MD look so simple minded lol
Question: If 80 percent of obesity is determined by genetics and food drive, how do we account for the drastic increase in obesity in the last several decades?
Sorry, but this guy has apparently done no reading about the social effects of class.
Honestly, I didn’t expect to disagree with Dr. Mike on so many points. But I appreciate that he also shared insights I can agree with.
Here in Finland, the correlation between poverty and obesity almost doesn't exist. USA then again has a massive obesity problem, even your president is an obese MOFO – though I do admit, that in the 90s we had a fatter president than your current one… Just makes me think…
This comment isn't meant to be the greatest thoughts ever on the subject, but still… Can't help wondering why obesity is such a massive problem in some countries, while much smaller in the others.
I posit that learned behavior is more prolonged and solidified into adulthood. If a child only knows one lifestyle, i would say they grow into living that kind of lifestyle as it is normal, and learning otherwise is difficult🤔🤔
What it sounds like is if someone is "nice" it's ok that they make stupid decisions, but if they are mean they should be held accountable. Sounds like the male/female dichotomy 🤣🤣
I would say naivete is more deadly than realistic
Eeeeek naaaaaah. Confirms why I stopped watching him. He has so many opinions that just aren’t correct.
My goodness his got political and fast. Liberals control the schools. Liberals control the real government. This is wild. 1:38:33
How does anyone have a bias if they don’t have free will? Now he’s blaming liberals for poor obesity. SMH. Why does he teach if there is no free will? How can someone make an impulsive decision if they don’t have free will? His argument is unraveling with each sentence.
Damn, Dr. Mike Israetel had me the whole time until he undercut his entire point. He just contradicted his entire argument. Dr. Mike Israetel spent an hour and a half explaining that genetics determine what we're going to do. Smart people do smart things, not emotional things. Then at 1:26:21, he canceled his entire argument as he said smart people aren't researching genetics because they are too liberal and it makes them emotionally uncomfortable. If smart people do smart things, and not emotional things, then how are smart people too afraid to do smart things because of their political affiliation? Also, because Dr Mike Israetel revealed his clear and emotional bias against left leaning America, does that mean he lacks the Trait Conscientiousness? He's now railing against liberals, clearly politically biased himself. I had so much hope for him.
hmm, I really agreed with about 1% of Israetel’s takes.
This is the most American argument about day-to-day human lives I've ever seen.
If you go to 3rd world nations to our south, the poor eat rice and beans almost exclusively. If you're truly poor, you're just happy to have something in your belly and not so much about how delicious the food is.
Who is the author of the book mentioned titled “Half life facts” or something like that? Couldn’t find it
This has to be the smartest buff dude I've seen
@ 30 minutes in, i feel like they should have mentioned that foreign laborers are always at risk of being deported due to losing their jobs. And the tech industry takes advantage of this by asking them to work harder else lose their immigration status.
Love the Thomas Sowell shirt! Great conversation
RFK jr is a prime example of nepotism. His uncle pulled strings to get him through college. Then once again put him into a district attorney's office despite him being very visually impaired on heroin. He shouldnt have even graduated and he wouldnt have without the backing of his family.
"who is to blame when nothing is wrong" excuse me wtf?
