I believe the disease you refer to, present in Lake Kivu, is called "BILHARZIA"..!! Not usually fatal for humans it can however seriously affect liver and kidney functions asw the microscopic parasites enter the blood stream and hatch their eggs in the aforementioned organs. I lived in Africa for 38 years and the disease is endemic to virtually all stetches of natural still water, through out the continent. So if visiting Africa beware of swimming, in open fresh water lakes and rivers, apart from the threat from Hippo's and the ever present crocodiles, there is also "Bilharzia"…!!
