I’m Haitian, and I’ve been saying this about our islands since forever. These vacation places are made to fulfill the nostalgic colonial fantasies of white Westerners while Afro-Caribbeans still work (but now for a wage how generous of them 🙄) to serve this contingent of people who do not want to vacation alongside you, but have you fill the stock characters of their tropical Caribbean fantasies. This is a problem for all of us islanders, and I wish many of us would call it out and move differently. But when we migrate to white countries we don’t really think about it because we’re often just grateful for having left. It’s a damn shame and I’m working tirelessly to not contribute to it.
I was there for two weeks two months ago and my husband and I traveled almost the entire island and made stops in various small villages to grab food or a beer. We had ZERO issues, in fact people were all so friendly and welcoming!
Anything that comes out of the USA, news-wise, is garbage

I want to make a point to black peoples that just because white peoples “take advantage” of travel opportunities and the resorts practice “plantation” like practices, doesn’t mean you should feel bad about trying to enjoy yourself. There are parts of the world that are less fortunate but they have things that we can enjoy which are monetized and sold to us. It sucks that that’s the case but only make it your fight if you plan to do something about it. Otherwise just tip the workers well and call it a day 🙏🏾🙏🏾

It’s not a traveling foreigners job to single-handedly raise the living wage in a country they’re visiting. If where I’m going, the people are used to living on three dollars a day, they are going to get three dollars a day. Trying to bring American standards and American economy to other nations just messes them up. If a person in Jamaica can live a good life on $30 a day, why the hell would I give them $50, and single-handedly created inflation for the next visitor? not to mention making the place more expensive the next time I want to come visit. Just stop.

Where did you stay in Kenya, I want to go. How do you find the places that you are talking about? I googled and I didn't find anything you talked about.
Montego bay has 2 parts. My friend lives there so I have visited and stayed in the local part which of course is very different to the tourist part and has its own life. But when I want to negril it was entirely centered on hotels and tourism, I was extremely bored.
St. Thomas is beautiful. I wonder if the waterpark is still there. Hellshire is also a free beach that locals go to and eat non-watered down fish and festival.
