Far too many children and adolescents are struggling with mental
health challenges and are unable to access the care and support they
need. Dr Anusha Lachman, President of the South African Society of
Psychiatrists, weighs in.

  1. What is really done? We dont have enough psychologists or psychiatrists in SA. Little to no investment in mental health. We have little research data. They are a vulnerable population which limits ethical research. I agree that data at GPs, schools and other resources are essential. Environments are not conducive to child and adolescent health. Violence, crime, unemployment and substance abuse are just some of the challenges on the ground. I agree we can't wait anymore. 40 psychiatrists for the entire SA. How many are in private healthcare? Up skill and enable appropriately qualified, screened and healthy individuals to provide care, and fund those individuals.
