  1. Shame upon this country. Shame, shame, shame.l, Uganda! They say absolute power corrupts, and corrupts absolutely. Honestly, good Ugandans, you had the audacity to manhandle the iconic popular Yvonne Chaka Chaka? Banange, nga we sometimes think so highly of ourselves! Listen, in the late 80s and 90s, the big names of music in the entire Southern Africa was topped by this enchanting singer. Before Lucky Dube touched the hearts of South Africans with his reggae ragga beats and lyrics, songbird had captured Africa with "mukomboti" and I am in love with a DJ. Yvonne had mesmerized not just Africa but the entire world. She may not have been as big as Whitney Houston. Marie Carie or MJ, but certainly ruled the airwaves from S Africa to Sudan.. As a young man in charge of a hyped talent/Karaoke show called "Top of the Bop Pops" , down south, Chaka Chaka graced our events as a reverie celebrity judge during the final national competitions. It was by all means a professionally organised show with state of the art lighting, sound, portable stage rigging, world class technicians, hefty prizes, the works! The judges would be Lucky Dube(RIP), Yvonne, the white Zulu, Brenda Fassie and others in that league. For years, Yvonne was the indisputable queen of pop in the region. When I say she was big, I mean, she remianed endearing even during the visit of the mega super star Whitney. And unlike the former, Chaka Chaka remained down yo earth. You see, I know a thing or two about stars and their pompous ways. Indeed my biggest lesson came from no other than Whitney herself. Back in the day,I had the privilege to initiate talks with Whitney Houston'manager/dad which ultimately saw the mega pop star step on the African soil for the first time (which was also to be the only time). After the blitz , glamour( and controversies around the obstinate singer), she left, after 3 shows only, the 3rd squeezed out of her after much cajoling and persuading. The late Whitney had come to sing in aid of a charitable organisation started by Madiba,(RIP)- Mandela Children's Fund. Strutting her stuff, Whitney demanded heaven on earth and my defacto employer met outrageous ultimatum after another. Although she had come to support the fund(she had a similar one herself), she demanded upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars upfront. Her argument was, she needed facilitation to fly in her huge planes, with massive equipment and large crew and entourage! On arrival, she ordered all limousines sprayed pink, all over , upholstery etc all, except tyres. This was done, and on and on, and on she made one request after the other. It was all done, after all the main boss was a president. (H.E, Lucas Manyane Mangope). What is my point? Mega stars can be ultra sensitive people, and for good reason too. An artist who can attract a packed stadium of 50,000 patrons is not your usual person to play games with. Yvonne has dined with the world's mightest men and women. She ruled the airwaves in countries across Aftica for well over 30 years, and remains a legend. Married to a medical doctor, the songbird has maintained her dignity and not once has she been spotted adorning skimpy stuff, associated with stardom in the little place we call Kampala city. It breaks my heart to hear the unbecoming manner in which this mother figure was handled by Ugandan security. Power!
