A Kenyan village where men are banned | DW Documentary
Kenya is a traditionally patriarchal land. With one exception: Right in the heart of the country lies the village of Umoja. Here, women are in charge.
Men have no access to Umoja. The village, which is located in Samburu County, is an oasis for women. Umoja means “connectedness” in Swahili; most of the 50 or so women living here are…

we will be free when we get beyond "ownership". We are caretakers. What does the land need to provide? What do we need to do to accept and acknowledge each other as equals?
Way of donating?
Great documentary!
May all the children of the Umoja village succeed in everything they'll put their hands to do.
To the founders , thank you for the courage you took to start this safe haven for the women who are now happily living here with no fear and threats from their domineering men.
It's worth donating so they can keep the fire burning.
But unfortunately where there is no man they're not going to live very long
These women are my heroes and don't even know it ❤❤❤❤
So wht do they do with the male children? Are they Ostracized at a certain age???
If we could just find a way to to propagate the species without men…….
If I had the funds to go there, I'd teach them self defense maneuvers. And they can teach the daughters. I love them, Creator blessings and peace.
This is what women in America need to start doing. Sticking together.. become ONE and start running things. Men have ruined everything and together we can make this right!
Great documentary. In America we call this a women's shelter. So very proud of these women demanding and creating their freedom and independence. I love Kenya. It is my second home.God is so good! 😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇
It just shows no matter how much right tries to stifle women, minorities, and LGBT people that we will always find a way to survive. There is no getting rid of us or our minds and rights.
@22:38 story goes the tribe's land was usurped but doesn't say how and by whom. To the 13 year old Samilla yes, there are men who respect the rights of women.
A village of strong women. God bless them.
Would have enjoyed much better had the narrator been someone else. Regardless of the message, W women are suspect just as much or even more than their counterparts!!! just saying. Perception is everything.
When that women said " I can't stand men anymore" explains how much she has been assaulted, abused and exploited by her own husband. It breaks my heart hearing them talk their story. I don't understand those men who do things like this without any reason how do they feel? Have they no heart? No love for their partners in life who do so much for them and what they do is to abuse them? Can't they live happily with their partners, help them and get helped by them, spend their life beautifully and have some memories to reminiscence about when they get old together? You live only once so why not live with love . Shower your partner with love and nurture them to see them grow old happily with you.
This was such an insightful documentary. How can I donate to these awesome group of women.
Ladies talking is a load of shit we as indiginice people know this is white taught crap. Sad bull crap
I hope our great great and greater grand children will get to live in a world where they will see just as many accomplishments from women in their history classes as from men.

Bravoo women are really multi in everything;& anything
Poor women, they suffer so, they look like queens, I'm glad theres no men.❤😊

At what age are male children expelled from the tribe?
How come Dee and Africa tigeress don't help to let the rest of the world know about these things happening in Kenya. They are making money 🤑💰 why not help your people especially the women. The killing of woman. It takes the white woman to shine light on the issue. I hope she will give them a donations for their story. Blessings 🙏🙏
It's not in the doc, but I love that men tried to build rival villages to steal business from these women and it fell apart. The women even ended up buying the same land from those failed villages 😂
I love the lives these women have built for each other, and the work they've done to share it with other women and girls. I hope they continue to be sucessful and happy.
Wish there had been a place like that for me and my children to go to when I had to get away from an abusive spouse and became a single parent constantly struggling for survival. Thank God we survived and my grown children are thriving. No thanks to their father.
I love their beads…power to the women ❤ 💕 💕 ♥
What is their religion?
I get it but it's horrible when you have a son.
27:40–27:53 That is one of the most horrible aspoects of those cultures: FGM.
They really need to start breading their own goats and not buy and eat.
They really need to start breading their own goats and not buy and eat.
At 28:10, It looks like he's a pretty good father. Also to be thinking logically- helping his daughter too. It seems like he doesn't want to be a village outcast though. He seems pretty worried about what the village thinks. (From my perspective at least, you never know)

Women don't really need men, they can do everything for themselves with God on their lives giving them His wisdom.
So sad to what is happening to women, may Father God help all women all over the world from the abusers.
This is beautiful. I've seen a documentary about this village before, so I clicked so fast.
I had an uncle umoja.
