I remember when San Francisco somehow succeeded in having the first case of typhus in the US in years. It was supposed to be a defeated disease, so this measles outbreak doesn’t really surprise me. 😑👏
Plus, this is EXACTLY why Ellis Island existed. It may sound cruel and callused, but is was the practical reason for its existence. After all, New York City and other large cities often had common outbreaks of yellow fever and TB and other illnesses on their own already, so why risk bringing more illness in and by chance something no doctor had possibly treated or had seen or heard of in the US?
Measles may not as dangerous to adults, but not only does it have a higher chance of killing children and infants, it can also lead to a long period of immunization ‘amnesia’ where the body forgets how fight off measles and even simple infections. In some cases, it may even permanently damage or outright destroy many cells in your bone marrow responsible for immune system memory.😳

If you have chicken pox, the virus remains in your body. When you are older, you can get “shingles” which are like blisters and lightening on your nerve endings, plus you can transmit them from person to person. My mother got shingles in her late 70’s, and was told she had to let every Doctor she had plus every ER/HOSPITAL visit that she had shingles for them to be extra careful. They told us that she could transmit this to pregnant medical staff or other pregnant/new moms, and it could harm/kill their babies exposure by damaging their development or causing miscarriages. I have since been vaccinated against shingles, rsv, tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (TDP), and trying to get find a pharmacy or health clinic to take my insurance for TITERS to see if I need an updated MMR or anything else. You can do blood titers (% of antibodies and immunity from previous vaccines.) If you have coverage, then you don’t need updated vaccines.

I don't want to scare people, but I've been a RN on the West Coast US for many years. We not only saw measles outbreaks in the immigrant neighborhoods, but also a strong strain of tuberculosis. What gave me a bit of scare, I was a translator for Spanish speaking people in my large hospital. We saw people who spoke only Indian dialects who did not know how a toilet works. (This was 20 years ago.) One patient had a husband who spoke Spanish so he could translate for me. But after a week of studies, we could not figure out what disease this poor woman had. Definitely something not seen in your average lab tests. Now fast-forward to 2024. How many people from other countries are we seeing? I no longer work in that setting but I have had patients recently who had strange skin diseases from the middle east and african countries that we have trouble diagnosing. I worked with soldiers who returned from the Middle East deserts, and the major problem at the hospitals was trying to figure out what illness they carried. We need to take in fewer immigrants, for the obvious reason that we will not be able to keep up with the illnesses that we encounter. My opinion, but it's from the inside of the business.

Most US citizens probably have had measles or been vaccinated. But, parents who chose to not vaccinate their children (for whatever reason) did so in the context of US hygiene standards and herd immunity. Now that the herd is spreading its bodily fluids publicly…..well, it might be the time to reassess risk vs potential benefit. When pregnant women get measles and the babies have serious effects, there will be outrage. Its been a couple of generations since pregnant women knew to be cautious about things like this. Young people may be shocked to see first hand the effects of poor hygiene and rampant disease.
Measles is only the tip of the iceberg. Wait for the "exotic" diseases that your doctor has never seen and doesn't look for.
