Why South Korean women aren't having babies | BBC News

South Korea has the lowest birth rate in the world, and it continues to plummet, beating its own staggeringly low record year after year.

If this trend continues Korea’s population will halve by 2100.

Governments have thrown money at the problem, giving parents monthly cash handouts and subsidised housing. But nothing has seemed to cut…

  1. Imagine the animals who lives in far worse condition still does not give such petty excuse like humans do.Because they know it is species survival which is common sense todays generation humans lack even though they are living much better life than previous generation.Child bearing for both men and women is responsility for species survival.The reason why they are even suffering from inflamation its because lack of population and less labour supply compare to demand.Which they brought it upon themselves.

  2. I get why not have kids but they are complaining about sports and after school activities and stuff. Its expensive tho everywhere for this stuff so it doesn’t explain SK low birth rates very well.

  3. As long as the rich keep getting richer, and the poor keep getting poorer, more women are going to choose to not have children. Tax the rich and the corporations FAIRLY.

  4. This isn't rocket science! Throwing money at the problem (paying people to have children), is not a workable solution. Progressive change mentally, culturally and socially must happen! This goes for other countries like Japan, Singapore, China, Italy, Russia, Spain etc as well.

  5. I’m young and my mother died before I hit my 30s and her biggest regret on her deathbed was focusing too much on her career than us (her children). I am college educated but I don’t believe in a career at all. I am a hard worker though. I saw how my mom put in decades into a corporation that didn’t care when she was dying of cancer.
    I will never give my loyalty to any company as a worker rat, I would much rather spend time cultivating a family and creating memories. That’s just my 2 cents.

  6. There's a global baby bust because we humans have been too successful, so we overshot our ecological niche. Ecological stress causes economic pressure, which in turn suppresses fertility.
    Like it or not, we must do at least one of:
    * Increase death rates
    * Decrease birth rates
    * Increase our sustainable niche.
    I recommend socially adapting to lower birth rates, and invest in sustainable infrastructure while the working population peaks and falls. We don't have to rebuild our entire present technosphere; just enough to sustain the lower population that we will have once we finish rebuilding.

  7. women dont want to have kids because they have been lied to by the progressive media. raising a child is a full time and meaningful job. the media promotes that women can have a career and a family. wrong. you have to choose and most women who choose career forego having kids until its too late.

  8. I have seen a pattern of people who didn’t enjoy their childhood not wanting to have kids. If you spent your entire childhood studying in to the late hours of the night why would you want that for your kid?

  9. Clever women. If you are a peasant/working class – living paycheck to paycheck how you going to raise them? Those who have them here is West Complain constantly! This is 21st century women are envolving and becoming more intelligent.

  10. Wow this is sad. Seems to mostly be a cost issue although the whole gender equality narrative isn’t helping. Both genders can provide equal value in different ways. But, if both are told equality means doing the same thing…like being career focused, then you get this type of outcome
