The Bookmaker: An ancient craft in Ethiopia | Africa Direct Documentary

The Bookmaker by filmmaker Girum Berehanetsehay unfolds in the mists of the high Ankober Mountains of Ethiopia.

Here, Archbishop Kalehiwot Habtewold still practices the ancient craft of parchment bookmaking.

To be able to do that, he sets his young disciples an unusual task: to find enough high-quality goat skins for the parchment needed…

  1. Oh, my Lord! You can learn more from watching these artists and scholars than from watching a hundred instructional videos on the internet. These people can teach us about our history, our art, our culture, and even our (their) religion. Truly wonderful, truly amazing!

  2. Greetings from Ethiopia 🇪🇹. Quickly three facts. 1. As an Ethiopian i can confirm this video is exactly the same how goat skin books had been made for thousands of years in Ethiopia. 2. This knowldge and skill of making a writing pulp from goat skin is almost disapearing from all over the world but in very few areas it is still a live exhibition of history. 3. Aljezira could make a lot of money if they organize themselves and prepare a full documnetary about this skill. ( starting from its history, to notable books made with the technuque, notable craftsmen in the past and today, how the skin is collected and prepared, how the inks are prepared, how the writing is done, how the pages are binded un to a book and casing and its significance.) There you have it a compleat synopsis hehe😂. I wish every one a happy Meskel( finding of the true cross this comung thursday).

  3. Happy to see so much of our systems still alive after so many attempts to destroy/erase them. I hope to see books & bookmaking resurge in Camerounian, Nigerian, Congolese, Zimbabwean & all our diverse written scripts. May the Gods preserve our people & land. May our ancestors guide us.

  4. I shed tears when the bishop blessed the food. What a great heritage. Why didn't the Church of Ethiopia made efforts to expand west? God bless Ethiopia and her people

  5. In Ethiopian Orthodox church each and every book starts by "The Name of the father the son and the holly spirit" .
God blesse you Ethiopia my country and holly Ethiopian Orthodox church.

  6. I stopped watching Al Jazzer even deleted from my phone because of their fake news and they’re the propaganda machine of TPLF and one sided media. Show more documentaries like this one please. We’re beautiful people with amazing culture. STOP airing one sided news of my home land Ethiopia. It’s a good start though!! keep it up.
