  1. Oh my gosh you had me on the floor 😂😂😂 here's a story: My mom, in 1950, wanted a White treadle sewing machine in a beautiful maple cabinet, with a chair that had a secret spot if you lifted up the seat 😉 So she got a job at the pharmacy down the street, and worked 12 hour days to get the money for her machine, the one I learned to sew on. 😊

  2. My card also declined – at the Violet Craft booth. They were so gracious, saying they were having trouble with the machine. If I’d known it was me, I would’ve used a different card. Turns out, my bank flagged the purchase as suspicious activity. I’m grateful for their excellent customer service, and that I had the cash to cover my purchase until I realized my bank placed a temporary freeze on my card.

  3. Shonda, congratulations on your new machine! Janomes are great machines! You got a nice haul over the weekend! My favorites are your Tilda buttons. I make little qirls' dresses with Tilda fabrics and buttons.

  4. You’re right about Raleigh showing up! This is my fourth QuiltCon and probably my favorite. If you can swing it come to Phoenix. It’s the best time of year to be here and I bet that it will be bigger than it was in 2022.

  5. I have worked retail long enough and had my cards refused often enough when I had the funds, where I don't feel much at all when it happens. But you can really tell who the experienced cashers are when it does happen, and it's some of the baby cashers that really judge. I try to forgive them. After all, they are just ignorant.

  6. Great recap and haul video, I enjoyed seeing your purchases. Love the T-shirts and all the lovely fabric and kits. So happy for you on the purchase of your new Janome machine, can’t wait to see videos with you using your new machine, thank you for sharing your experience.

  7. Great Haul! My Janome 5600 is 20 years old and still works like a charm – even after I turned over a fresh cup of hot black coffee into the bobbin well about 10 years ago. I want a 2nd machine as a backup, so I’m looking forward to you showing yours off😀.

  8. Thank you for your observations , I agree about the lack of seating.
I attended Quiltcon on Friday solo.
I am also a minority but do not fall under any regular category ( I was born in the Middle East). My experience was very positive. Everyone that I sat next to ,if I needed to take breaks, eat lunch or listen to a presentation, engaged me in conversation. Also toward the end of the day while waiting for my ride, a staff member noticed me and asked if I needed assistance. I found the whole experience very positive. I have been to other quilt shows and have never felt so welcomed.
I like your suggestion about meetings of various people who want to connect. You have many great points.

  9. Not flying to save money for fabric! I also bought additional little Olfa magnet box cutters and have placed them on my fridges, on the dryer, by my computer, in the bathrooms, in my sewing room in a couple of different places and in my car. I don't have kids living at home but I do have a husband that I remind on occasion to put my box cutters back where I had them. They are so stinkin' handy! Wish the blades could be replaced instead of having to pitch them. That must have been a heavy kit to carry around and yes, that stripology ruler would have been awkward to carry around. Are you allowed to take your own tote to carry purchases? We have the same taste in fabrics – I've been waiting for Hancock's to get the Ravel. Festivals are the best place to get sewing machines, terrific prices! Awesome haul!

  10. I've been to Quiltcon 2020 in Austin, TX and 2023 in Atlanta, GA. When I attend any quilt show I always plan my itinerary "before" they open up registration. Classes fill up fast during registration. You're always going to have to make some hard decisions about classes and other events. We didn't purchase the over all big ticket for all events because we signed up for more classes. However, during both trips we were able to get a hotel within walking distance of the convention center that enable us to go back to our room when we wanted to rest or to drop off our haul. However, I got the hotel reservations for both events a year in advance. In Austin, I truly believe my sister and I were the only black quilters there. We did meet a black owner/vendor in Austin. We just except that we will be extreme minorities at most quilt shows. Suggestions about having a budget or just having cash are critical for your financial health. I'm hearing that there are actual vendors that ran out of inventory for the 1st time. As for the denial of your card, to avoid that happening to me, I contact my creditors before traveling and let them know where I'm traveling. Especially if the location is someplace I never used any cards or if it's been awhile since I used a card. We probably won't go next year because I missed the peak period to make a hotel reservation and the close and nice locations are already sold out. Plus, we try to visit a local quilt store in the cities that host a quilt show. Mostly, we're looking for local fabric designs that are not part of the big fabric companies.

  11. You had a great time! Chanda, your haul was mind blowing…a new machine as well. Just as well the conventions only every few years I reckon. But what an experience. Understand crowd-phobia as I don’t go anywhere, though I used to before becoming disabled. Now ima home body☺️🇦🇺❤️

  12. That’s an impressive haul!! I try to bring cash when shopping like this, just because sometimes my phone won’t do all the fun things. The internet access can often be spotty at these events. How disappointing that the shopping was so picked over by Saturday, though!
