China’s BYD surpasses Tesla as leading electric car seller

For the first time, Chinese automaker BYD has overtaken Tesla, as the world’s best-selling producer of electric vehicles.
It delivered more than its US-based rival in the last quarter of 2023 – although Tesla managed to hold on to its crown for sales throughout the year.

Al Jazeera’s Florence Looi reports from Beijing.

  1. ALL China EV cars are government subsidized. So they will surely have a big advantage to any car manufacturers. However, with BMW, TOYOTA, GM gearing for H2 vehicles this may spell some tough sailing for the EV cars. Though I believe that the future fuel will really be H2. But this will take time romp up H2 filling stations

  2. Ken Griffin says it's heartbreaking to see BYD overtaking TELSA. On the contrary, I think it is a great development. We in South East Asia need companies like BYD. This commentator says nothing about the Chinese government's help attended from the Very URGENT need to address the air pollution and same storms descending on Peking and elsewhere. He has rightly added that TELSA also gets Chinese government's support, but TELSA is selling at higher prices to earn more profit, to helping China to lower air pollution. We benefited from BYD.

  3. Well done china , keep up the good work but not sure why all media around the world naming China before saying the brand name , they don't say USA before naming tesla or I phone or any other brand clearing seeing that us don't want any other company to win on race plus Hawaii was giving best mobile phone and good quality for cheaper price and us want to get rid off , it does not matter how hard you suppress the ball under the water but one day you will not hold and let it go and the consequences will be double because the ball will come out much faster 😉

  4. It that really a surprise? China will own the auto industry within the next 15 years, maybe even sooner. Hard working, smart, innovative people will succeed. And no sanction will stop them. In fact it will encourage them to work harder. And for those who say it's bc of cheap labor, have a look at production lines in BYD. You almost see no humans. It's something straight out of Minority Report. China is showing us the future.

  5. All though the ev market is wonderful its still a cost. Parts, batteries, electric
Slave labor to mine it, cheap labor to make it and your children to figure out how to dispose of it because it's not cost efficient in the end.

  7. Tesla produced 1.8 million EV Cars in 2023 , and 53% of these were coming out from their Shanghai Factory in China .

China will be the biggest EV Cars producers in 2024 .

  8. The BYD costs 2/3 of the Tesla Model 3. That's pretty damned difficult to compete with.
But that's cause China controls the materials/ production and the labor is cheap.
My new Cadillac Lyriq's components were made mostly in China.

  9. Glad to see the dethroning of the musky Musk. Musk is a Trump clone, albeit not with the abnormal brain. Indoctrinated in apartheid, growing up in South Africa, racism and hatred are in Elon Musk's bones.

  10. Ah but will a BYD car mow down pedestrians for you while you're asleep at the wheel before catching on fire allowing you to deftly avoid culpability in death?

  11. China BYD has an advantage of labor forces so I think they will surpass Tesla anytime, however I still take Tesla over BYD in term of quality, superior features, and software control. The plan for cheap $25K model is in the work and when it's ready and with tax credit it will sell like cup cake. As always competition is good for consumer.
