Panama Canal suffering major disruption | BBC News

Global shipping is severely disrupted by Houthi attacks on ships heading to the Suez Canal.

Across the Atlantic, the other canal vital to global trade is also suffering from major disruption as fewer ships are now getting through.

The El Niño weather phenomenon contributed to a severe drought, the ACP said.

It is expected to increase the…

  3. Yeah, ummm…BBC, this was announced months ago and they knew that the El Nino issue was going to cause rainfall issues. The main problem is that they can't pump in seawater as it's used for drinking water as well. So they can't shortcut a fix. The only real solution is either for Mexico to build their bypass solution which takes the load off the ships and transfers them from one side to the other, or come up with a hyper-expensive solution to desalinate the water first before trying to fill the lake with that water. The again, I hear the fees for the passage are really high right now, maybe they could swing it.

  4. It's not climate change it's human stupidity. Only complete dumbasses would build a canal that uses fresh water that doesnt get reused and instead just dumps it out. You only have yourselves to blame.

  5. This is what happens when you have 8 billion people on the planet. Countries in Africa, parts of Asia, and the middle east have booming populations. Industrialized nations have declining – sustainable populations – energy wise. Put the blame where it belongs.

  6. It can’t just be regular changes in climate. Like El Niño or a few dry years then a few wet years. You know regular earth climate cycles. Oh no it’s got to be man made climate change that’s causing it. Gimme a break

  7. Could they pump ocean water to fill them? I imagine they would then have to do something to treat the water to keep the lake from becoming too salty. They wouldn't have to completely switch, but could supplement the lake water with pumped salt water.

  8. FACT:

HUGE waste of water when Cruise ships enter the canal then turn around and leave 5 hours later.

No Cruise ship should be allowed to enter the canal unless it passes from one side to another.

  9. I just love how entirely not in control of anything we are.
Mamma Nature looks at us and says, ‘Those are some fun canals you built down there, good job – hope you don’t need them for anything important cause you won’t be using them this year! XOXO.’

  10. If climate change deniers suddenly acknowledge it’s man made, there’s not switch to flip to fix a drought. If it’s simply Nature, there’s no switch to stop it.

  11. This is a prime example of how the ecological, economic, political & socio-cultural etc spheres are interconnected & interlinked. ALL human systems are WHOLLY reliant on ecological systems so we do well to take care of the planet as best we can. Sustainable development rests on 3 main pillars – ecological health, economic sustainability & social justice, all resting on a firm foundation of respect for human rights, strong social support institions & other organisations that serve the public interest and hold govs to account. Ecological care & protection does not mean sacrificing a thriving economy or discriminating against people, it just means we need to consider the welfare of the environment in our activities & making adjustments where necessary & holding corporations & govs accountable. Politicians & oligarchs are only around for a few years, but its society in general & future generations that pay the cost of corporate & political shenanigans while they get rich & retire to a beautiful island somewhere – far from the mahem & pollution they cause. Every person can help preserve the integrity & resilience of ecological systems, processes & services as citizens, in our careers & as consumers.

  12. We are really doomed. We were in el nino condition which supposedly brought a lot of rain in south america. But in fact, panama has less rain. Cannot even imagine if we have la Nina this year.
