Deadliest Journeys – Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is one of the world’s last lawless lands lying 150 kilometres north of Australia. The town of Lae is the economic capital of the country here it more commonly goes by the name “Pothole city”.

It’s a sorry sight with its battered roads it’s packed mini buses and it’s extreme levels of poverty. In the streets uncertainty reigns…

  3. Not a kind word said about these people who have had so much taken by them by Australia, Europe and Indonesia this doco is another example of white people coming and extracting something, in this case a documentary about how terrible the people are. Shame

  4. I live in Australia and visited there in the 1970s. Even then we were advised to be very careful where we visited/night visits etc. We dropped a new car off for the buyer in Mt Hagen from Lae. We were advised not to stop if we hit anything, human or animal, as the natives would appear and kill or severely wound you. Yes, it was an adventure for sure but we made it. I guess as it was a new car there was little chance of a breakdown. Lots to talk about it but in summary a great place to visit if you want an adventure but not for a restful holiday type break. Go to Fiji for that.

  5. So many friendly, and kind people giving comments here. 🙂 So glad to see that, it gives me a renewed belief in fellow people. God bless you all, from dark and cold winter Norway. 😉

  6. Lovely programme – well done. Our British King Charles III rules over there. Sadly we are apparently giving up the Chagos Islands which when we do means the sun WILL set on the British Empire. Currently it never does as we have so much within it – the biggest empire the planet has ever had. The Frenchman with the supermarkets and the NZ pilot are interesting men from outside. The ones in most of the villages are lucky. Those in poverty in the town are worse off. The closer they are to civilisation the worse off they are really over all. By the way the dubbing was not always needed as they were speaking relatively clear English most of them and better English than the dubbing eg priest talks about going off the road and dubbing uses slang "curtains for me".

  7. This documentary was shot probably 20 years ago. There’s a big development and social change in the last 20 years. The Highlands highway had drastically improved. Lae has a massive facelift with concrete roads and a 4 lane highway to the new Nadzab airport 42 km outside of Lae. Lae’s no longer a pothole city.

  8. 21:44 it makes me angry that while we are over here getting fat to the point of being morbidly obese, getting heart disease and kidney failure from so much food….people elsewhere are living on scraps and living in pure lawlessness. I appreciate the good things my country brings to the table but I think we should help others live at least to half of the standard of living in America. Even the homeless people in America have more money than people in these places. So sad. Cuba, the continent of Africa, Papua New Ginea, you name it, the list goes on and on. We are over here complaining about inflation and they are over there starving. WTF
