  4. Pricing is quite variable but shouldn’t ever be below that. For one person, that is actually on the very low end. It depends on how many people in your group and which route, as there are varying fees depending on which one you use. For example, Marangu Route tends to be cheaper because it has huts (and therefore needs fewer porters to carry equipment), but it has a dismal success rate. Kilimanjaro is indeed a UNESCO World Heritage site and therefore has steep park fees to keep it from getting totally destroyed. This means most of your climbing fees go to the national parks, not your climbing outfitter. Whatever one does, don’t try to do Kilimanjaro on the cheap. It means you are trading your dollar savings for harsh treatment of your porters, who will not be paid enough or paid at all, Not properly fed, either, which is shameful and unethical. In addition, you get a more dangerous trek because your staff will be demoralized knowing they’re putting their lives at risk for no or little payout.

    Moral of the story: if a single climber pays less than $2650 for a non-Marangu Route, you can be assured your porters are getting screwed and you are aiding and abetting unethical operators in forcing slave labor.

    Also, Tipping should be minimum $350 group tip per client according to local custom, plus other smaller tips for certain staff who helped you the most, though unfortunately many guides will steal that or part of it and yes—you guessed it—screw the porters. You must ensure that your tips get where they belong. I was subjected to these unethical practices for years in terrible working conditions on Kilimanjaro. I now have my own small company and do everything on the up and up, totally ethical. I’ll never look back.

    Don’t pay less than $2650, please. And if you can’t afford it, wait until you can. Don’t force these porters into a bad situation just because you want a cheap climb.

  7. They have made a continent's highest peak into a pure commercial experience. It is not possible or legal to hike it without such an entourage. This is not really mountaineering, it is luxury tourism. So an entire mountain has been ruined for real moutnaineers.
