For the Olympics to thrive the IOC should want to maximise the countries competing and the number of events they compete in. The current method of ranking countries exclusively by gold medals discourages less wealthy countries from competing in a broad range of events. A common sense approach to ranking nations is to assign points to each medal – bronze = 1 point, silver = 2 points, and gold = 4 points. This will provide a much more representative ranking than gold only ranking.
