How could the Rwandan genocide happen? – BBC Africa

In just 100 days in 1994, about 800,000 people were slaughtered in Rwanda by ethnic Hutu extremists.

They were targeting members of the minority Tutsi community, as well as their political opponents.

But how did the genocide start, and what is it like in Rwanda now?

BBC Africa’s Victoria Uwonkunda explains.

Produced by Leyla Najafli.

  1. 0:47 That’s where they lost the plot. The tradition that had united them for so long completely faded in the shadow of Western religion. Once that influence came into play, it became simple to attribute their struggles to the devil. And with a clear image of what the devil looks like, it’s all too easy to justify violence with a gun or a machete. Keep in mind that the same entity that introduced the religion comes from a country that operates like a weapons manufacturing powerhouse, thriving on the sale of arms.

  2. My experience with racism here in America can explain some of the “how” it could happen. I have never hated anyone as much as I hate the Black people who were more racist towards me than White people were. I expect it from Whites, but it's most hurtful when the hate is coming from people who look like you!

  3. There is country or UN that can save the Africans from each other, the corruption in their governments and catching up with about a hundred years of underdevelopment. There was law and order as long as they were colonies. They got their independence and this is what happened.

  4. You know what 😏 your explaining the this you got from paper or story telling not reality.. it was better to know everything that happened and how Rwandans suffered the reason why im saying this im Rwandan and I had been refugee in other country

  5. Killings were happening even earlier, 1993. I am not so sure the reason is just this. I am horrified that this can go on. Where was the help? I hope and pray for equality among all men and women and greed to take a back seat finally.

  6. The abyss is within the heart of fallen man.Scripture say that the heart of man is deceitful above all, and desperately wicked: who can know it. Jesus saves us from perdition and by His stripes we are healed

  7. You are asking that the Orthodox and Catholics be abolished and that only Muslims remain under the false name of Bosniaks. At the beginning of the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the most ie. Serbs were 51%, before the Second World War 89% were Serbs. Now, the Collective West committed genocide and reduced the number of Serbs to below 40%. "Well done" to the GENICIDAL Western Coalition.
    ->
The Western coalition continues to incite ethnic conflicts in order to subordinate one of the parties, and it does not matter to them whether it is the ethnic majority or minority in that territory. Thus Rwanda and Germany (i.e. the colony and the colonizer) in an agreement to justify their current and previous genocidal behavior, which has its roots in Nazism, shift their own responsibility to the victim (i.e. they supposedly "make excuses","lustration"), just like in a fairy tale where the thief draws attention to the victim with the words "beware of the thief", and right now he is committing genocide against the Serbs.

  8. BBC is totally sick. …to call it a genocide against Tutsis is not to deny that there were collateral victims who weren’t tutsis. But the genocide WAS against Tutsis. A Rwandan genocide doesn’t mean anything… the killings did not target a group called “Rwandans.”

  9. Africa is in a good place now, China is ransacking their resources and Russia is supporitng militias and authoritarian regimes there, their future is bright.

  10. When you say international community, are you saying we African are so FOOLISH we have to kill each other for someone to come and intervene.Who told you guys UN resolve conflicts anyway. The UN resolve conflicts base on skin color else they are there to help steal resources

  11. What was UN doing there if so many people died or they were only there for minerals as is always the case. These Western army bases must all be closed like it is happening in Mali and Burkina Faso

  12. You're leaving out some important information. The Tutsi was picked by the Belgians to rule over their brother the Hutus. When the Belgians left the land they gave the power to the Hutu. Obviously this gave the chance for revenge on the Tutsi more prevalent. The spark was the assassination, but the build to that spark was anger toward the tutsi and the Belgians creating that friction

  13. What exactly caused the Hutu to turn against the Tutsi’s? Out of all the videos and articles I’ve read not one has answered this question. I know they mention Europeans but exactly what happened? It’s so frustrating that there’s not a detailed account of what happened. Were the Hutu’s treated badly by the ruling Tutsi majority which caused them to revolt?
